What is a library assistant?

Library Assistants are support staff who help ensure the smooth operation of libraries. They assist patrons with finding materials, check books in and out, organize and shelve library items, and help maintain library records. Their duties often include answering basic questions, processing new materials, and supporting librarians in daily tasks. Library Assistants play an important role in making the library a welcoming and organized space for everyone.

What does a Library Assistant do?

Library assistants support the head librarian in operating the library and maintaining its materials. Other responsibilities include cataloging books, movies, audio resources, reference materials, slides, and microfilm. Library assistants inspect these items regularly for damage or missing pieces, especially while they are checking out resources to library patrons. As a library assistant, you must enjoy helping visitors locate materials, as well as providing technical assistance as needed. While a library assistant job does not require education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, job seekers pursuing a career as a librarian will need a master’s degree in library science or a related field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Library Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring library science coursework or experience. Familiarity with library cataloging systems, integrated library software (like Koha or Aleph), and basic computer applications is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication, and teamwork abilities help Library Assistants effectively support patrons and library staff. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining efficient library operations, ensuring accurate resource management, and providing a welcoming environment for users.

What are some common challenges library assistants face, and how can they effectively handle them?

Library Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of patron requests, maintaining accurate organization of materials, and adapting to new library technologies. To handle these effectively, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, practice clear communication with patrons and colleagues, and stay up to date with library management systems. Regular training and seeking support from senior staff can also help Library Assistants navigate busy periods and technology updates with confidence.

Both roles are essential in supporting library operations, but Library Technicians typically have a higher level of technical expertise and responsibilities.

Can you be a library assistant with no experience?

Basic skills such as organization, communication, and familiarity with library systems or tools can be helpful, but many employers consider entry-level candidates and provide training to develop necessary skills.

How hard is it to get a job as a library assistant?

Getting a job as a library assistant typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent and some experience with customer service or administrative tasks. Many positions are entry-level and may not require formal certifications, but familiarity with library systems and good communication skills can improve chances. Competition varies by location and library size, but overall, it is generally accessible for those with the appropriate qualifications.

Job description

Paraeducator — Do Work That Truly Matters

If you’re looking for a role where you can make a real, human impact every single day, becoming a Paraeducator at Crotched Mountain School could be your place to shine. You will support students (up to age 22) with significant neurodevelopmental and intellectual disabilities as they build communication, independence, and confidence. Some students are non-speaking. Many rely on caring, consistent adults to help them navigate their world—and that’s where you come in.

About Crotched Mountain School...

Nestled in the beautiful Monadnock region of New Hampshire, Crotched Mountain School offers a therapeutic and adventure-based environment for learners. Our expansive campus features hiking trails, lakes, an Olympic-sized pool, a media center, a bowling alley, and a panoramic library — all designed to help students grow socially, academically, and emotionally.

Over the past three years, Seven Hills has been revitalizing this historic program: expanding services, welcoming new students, and building a passionate team of clinicians, educators, and caregivers who make extraordinary things possible for youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

What You’ll Do as a Paraeducator (Overview)...

  • Support 1–2 students in the classroom and throughout daily routines
  • Implement IEPs and behavior plans with guidance from a multidisciplinary team
  • Build creative, compassionate connections, including with nonverbal students
  • Celebrate all progress, from small steps to major breakthroughs
  • Provide hands-on support, including personal care (toileting, hygiene, dressing)
  • Actively participating in student activities including classroom work, swimming, hiking, bowling, playground fun, assisting with mobility, lifting (up to 50 lbs), etc., and ensuring student safety
  • 2nd level paraeducators may also support other staff in best practices, training, leading, etc.

What to Expect as a Paraeducator at CMS (The Real, Important Part)...

This role is equal parts heartwarming, fast-paced, and “did that really just happen?” We believe in being upfront—this job will challenge you, grow you, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

  • A lively environment: Classrooms can be busy and sometimes loud— think less “library vibes” and more “organized chaos with a purpose.” We don’t do “dull moments” here at CMS!
  • Supporting complex behaviors: Some students communicate through behaviors, including aggression or attempts to leave the area. You’ll be trained to respond safely and effectively, with consistent team support and clear plans in place.
  • A wide range of students: You’ll work with everyone from fast-moving elementary students to teens and young adults. The role can be physically demanding, so staying engaged, aware, and ready to move is essential.
  • Hands-on care (ADLs): You’ll assist with personal care and daily living needs—meaningful, essential work that requires compassion, respect, and adaptability.

What You Bring...

  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Comfort supporting individuals with significant needs and behaviors
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain active throughout the day

Schedule & Pay...

  • Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 44 weeks per calendar year (no work on holidays, school vacation weeks, or snow days).
  • $20.00/hr (Para I - no college degree) –$21.00/hr (Para II - with college degree)

Your Seven Hills Benefits...

  • $2,000 sign-on bonus
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • 403(b) retirement plan with company match of 25-33% based on years of service
  • Accrued sick and personal days
  • Paid orientation and training
  • Student loan assistance & paid education (tuition, certifications, licensure, etc.)
  • PSLF-eligible nonprofit employer
  • EAP, FSA/HSA, life insurance, parental leave, home mortgage program, professional development assistance, referral program, legal insurance, pet insurance, and more

Are you ready to turn your job into a truly rewarding career? Apply now and open the door to possibilities.
