Library Assistant

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Shelves books, magazines, and other library materials according to various systems.

  • Ensures all materials are re-shelved in correct order.

  • Reviews library collection to maintain proper organization.

  • Checks condition of books, removes obsolete/damaged materials for review, and performs minor mending.

  • Processes new, rebound, and reconditioned materials for circulation and reference.

  • Assists with annual inventory of collection.

  • Supports automated and manual circulation duties, including:

    • Registering and deleting users.

    • Charging and discharging library materials.

    • Managing reserves and interlibrary loan requests.

  • Assists with processing overdue materials.

  • Follows procedures for library procurement/acquisition.

  • Explains library rules to users and ensures compliance.

  • Assists users in locating books and information in catalogs, databases, and shelves.

  • Refers complex questions to higher staff members.

  • Performs routine clerical tasks, such as:

    • Answering the telephone.

    • Taking messages.

    • Referring callers or visitors to appropriate staff members.

  • Helps maintain and update library statistics and filing.

  • Uses word processing software to prepare various documents.
