Position Details
Title: Library Assistant III
Location: Warren Branch
Hours: Full Time (40 hours/ week)
Schedule: may vary, but will include day, evening, and weekend hours; including mandatory occasional Sundays
Starting Hourly Rate: $18.50
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

A successful candidate will...
  • Four years of high school or equivalency
  • One to three years of experience
  • Proficient with technology and computer basics, use of the internet, Microsoft Office programs, and computer equipment
  • Knowledge of Apple and Android operating systems is preferred
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Be bilingual (preferred but not required).
What does the job look like?
  • Assists the Manager by communicating pertinent information regarding staff performance and/or workflow issues. Assists and guides other clerical staff training regarding departmental and library policies and procedures.
  • Assists patrons with finding library materials, recommending titles, locating library materials at other branches and placing requests. Provides preliminary, quick reference assistance and refers in-depth research requests to the Librarians on duty.
  • Assists in collection management activities including general maintenance, sorting and shelving materials, reading shelves and moving materials as needed. Checks items daily to ensure they have RFID tags.
  • Contacts patrons with missing or mismatched items and sends damaged materials letters.
  • Maintains and prepares the Public Library Access Card database as required by the Indiana State Library, including processing all public library access cards sold by the system.
  • Records and reports statistics related to study room use by the public; assists patrons by making requested study room reservations.
  • Analyzes and makes decisions regarding patron problems, makes appropriate judgment, and handles overall supervision of the clerical staff in the absence of the Central Services Manager or Circulation Supervisor; assists patrons with questions about library policies, procedures and services.
  • Accepts and processes all outgoing and incoming materials.
  • Assists patrons with library card applications. Assists with sending faxes for patrons. Enters Desk Tracker stats.
  • Prepares cash drawer; prepares and delivers bank deposit.
  • Accepts payment for overdue, lost and damaged materials, as well as for printing, copying, faxes and other computer services.
  • Able to work the normally scheduled work time for this position.
  • Able to cope with daily job-related stress.
  • Checks completed library card applications for accuracy, making corrections as needed.
  • Orders supplies. Processes mail.
  • Assists at Reference Desk as needed. Assists patrons with copiers, printers and computers.
  • Reserves small study room for patrons.
  • Attends training and information meetings as directed. Participates on special committees and assists with research and/or training for special projects.
  • Attends community events to promote the library.
  • Assists with displays and/or promotional materials.
  • Directs volunteer activities, as needed.
  • Serves as person-in-charge, as needed.
  • Performs other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.
