Job description

Library Assistant I - Circulation Substitute
If you're looking for meaningful part-time work, consider joining our team! The Staunton Public Library is hiring a part-time Circulation Substitute to work at a busy service desk assisting patrons and handling a high volume of library materials. Circulation Substitutes work on an on-call basis to help cover for illness, vacation, etc. for all shifts, as well as required monthly Saturday hours.
As a welcoming, friendly presence, this role requires excellent communication and customer service skills as well as a keen attention to detail. Applicants must enjoy working with a wide range of library visitors, including children. The position requires bending, standing and lifting throughout shifts.
Circulation Substitute Schedule:
  • On-call basis to help cover for illness, vacation, etc. for all shifts
  • At least one Saturday per month, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma required. Previous customer service experience and excellent computer skills required. Candidates with Spanish language or American Sign Language knowledge are encouraged to apply.
Hourly wages start at $16.78/hour with annual paid holidays plus two personal holidays; no health or retirement benefits. An expected start date for this position is September 8, 2026.
