General Summary:

The professional librarian enjoys working with the public and exhibits dignity and respect for each patron through reference and readersโ€™ advisory services.


This is a substitute position. Hours are not guaranteed and vary based on scheduling needs; the selected candidate will be called upon to fill shifts as vacancies arise.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Promote a positive library image through proactive customer service that includes information services.
  • Guide patrons in readersโ€™ advisory.
  • Assist patrons with personal electronic devices and downloadable resources.
  • Explain library policies and procedures to the public; Monitor the behavior of library users, effectively ascertaining and handling problematic situations.
  • Carry out emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Assist in minor trouble shooting and maintenance of equipment including computers, printers, and scanners.
  • Stay current with changes to procedures and policies affecting department and/or library operations.
  • Perform related work as required and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position:

  • Masterโ€™s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution; candidates currently enrolled in an accredited MLS program will also be considered.
  • State of Michigan Level I or II Librarian Certificate or ability to obtain same.
  • Must possess a valid driverโ€™s license.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with the public and staff.
  • Possess knowledge of library best practices, services, and automated systems.
  • Possess knowledge of library classification and how information is organized; Use efficient and accurate methods to retrieve information.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate, and present ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to collaborate with professional and support staff.
  • Pleasant and courteous telephone skills.
  • Prompt and dependable with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to use basic office equipment and various computer software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and the Internet.
  • Ability to work under stress, and be flexible and adaptive to changes in work priorities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; use hands with dexterity; reach with hands and arms; be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
