Job description

Our NYC Firm is growing, and we are looking for a sharp litigator who will zealously represent clients in all areas of Family and Divorce Law in NY. The right candidate must have at least 3-5 years of experience working in a NY matrimonial law firm. We are looking for a candidate who has vast litigation experience in the NYC Family and Supreme Courts, with excellent writing and communication skills.


You will represent clients in a variety of matters, including navigating prenuptial agreements and litigating divorce and family law issues, such as custody, support, and the distribution of assets and liabilities in complex and high-asset cases.


The prime candidate will have litigation experience and will be able to process a case independently from start to finish.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate with other attorneys and paralegals to effectively move through the litigation process
  • Help solve divorce and family issues for clients by analyzing situations, understanding their needs, and creating a strategic plan of action
  • Handle complex, high-asset divorce cases from start to finish
  • Handle complex, contentious custody and financial disputes in the Supreme and Family Courts
  • Advise and represent clients in the division of marital assets issues during divorce proceedings
  • Advise and advocate for clients in child custody disputes
  • Represent clients in court proceedings
  • Draft pleadings, motions, contracts, marital settlement agreements, divorce judgments, support orders, trial briefs, summations, and other documents for a high volume of cases
  • Hearing Preparation 
  • Client Representation 
  • Case consultation & strategizing with a client 
  • Communication with opposing parties, the court, and others
  • Perform case law research to identify and apply relevant judicial decisions, statutes, legal articles, codes, and other pertinent material 
  • Investigate the facts of a case 
  • Review and monitor new and updated laws and regulations 
  • Edit & approve substantive correspondence 
  • Ensuring transparency of the firm's casework 
  • Answering the client's questions in a timely fashion 
  • Keeping clients aware of their case status to their satisfaction 
  • Abiding by the ethical rules of the profession 
  • Thorough & timely counseling clients on settlement versus contesting issues 
  • Promoting an excellent client experience 
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Senior Attorney

Qualifications:
  • Candidates should be great negotiators and communicators, specifically in situations when emotions and stress are high
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in a matrimonial firm in New York
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, especially in highly stressful and emotional situations
  • Technical training or knowledge: Basic business software (MS Office Suite), Email client software, Dropbox software, and cloud service, eFax, case management software, Legal research software (Westlaw, Lexis), and other computer and telephone technology as may be implemented and required for the position
  • Work experience in the same or similar job: At a minimum, three (3) years of experience in a divorce law firm or related attorney experience. Exemplary work experience in family law practice areas
  • Required general education or equivalent: Juris Doctorate from an ABA law school. Timely compliance with CLE requirements
  • Required Licensure: Admitted to practice law in New York and in satisfactory standing with the State Bar
  • Communications: Capable of clearly expressing written and oral ideas with proper grammar, formatting, and decorum; Thorough knowledge of legal communication principles and practices; Demonstration of emotional intelligence
  • Work from the office on an as-needed basis
