As a Leverman, your main responsibilities include operating and controlling dredging or excavation equipment using levers and pedals to move earth, sand, or other materials precisely. You'll monitor gauges, respond to signals from crew members, and ensure the equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. Daily tasks may also involve performing routine inspections and minor maintenance on machinery to prevent breakdowns. Levermen work closely with other operators and site supervisors, making teamwork and clear communication critical for project success and safety.
To thrive as a Leverman, you need strong mechanical aptitude, hand-eye coordination, and a thorough understanding of operating heavy dredging or excavation equipment, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications. This position is accountable for performing general deck duties as assigned by the Mate (or Leverman, Deck Captain or Dredge Captain). Incumbents are responsible for assisting the crew as needed, performing daily checks on engines, housekeeping, and appearance of the vessel, securing deck lines and a variety of other related duties. Typically, they will work under close supervision of the Mate.

Prior marine vessel experience is preferred but not required. However, the incumbent must:

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSThe incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
