What does a level designer do?

A Level Designer is responsible for creating the environments, stages, or levels in a video game. They design the layout, challenges, and pacing to ensure the gameplay experience is engaging and balanced. Level Designers work closely with other team members such as artists, programmers, and game designers to bring their concepts to life, often using specialized software and game engines. Their goal is to make sure each level is fun, visually appealing, and fits within the story and mechanics of the game.

What does a level designer do?

A level designer uses special design software to create levels, which are also known as stages or maps, for a video game. As a level designer, your duties may include mapping the level, creating a layout, and using your artistic skills to create the look and feel of the stage's environments and locales. Your designs need to fit with the gameplay and story scenarios, so you frequently collaborate with other members of the design team, like environment artists. Your designs need to include any structural elements required by the storyline or game missions, so adhering to a game’s narrative is an essential part of your job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a level designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Level Designer, you need a solid understanding of game design principles, spatial awareness, and experience with 3D modeling or level editing software, often supported by a degree in game design or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like Unity, Unreal Engine, and visual scripting systems is typically required. Creativity, strong collaboration skills, and attention to detail help Level Designers stand out when crafting engaging player experiences. These skills are crucial for building immersive, balanced, and enjoyable game environments that support both gameplay and storytelling.

How does a level designer typically collaborate with other departments during game development?

Level Designers work closely with artists, programmers, and game designers to bring levels to life. They often start by discussing design goals with the core game design team, then partner with artists to ensure visual consistency and technical requirements are met. Regular playtesting sessions with QA and feedback from other departments help refine the player experience. Effective communication and iteration are essential, as Level Designers must balance creative ideas with technical constraints and gameplay objectives.

What is the difference between Level Designer vs Environment Artist?

While both roles contribute to the game's visual and spatial experience, Level Designers focus on gameplay layout and player experience, whereas Environment Artists specialize in creating the visual aesthetics of game worlds. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within the game development industry.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Facilities Layout & BIM Designer
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Facilities Layout & BIM Designer to play a pivotal role in the expansion and optimization of our high-tech manufacturing infrastructure. You will lead the technical design of equipment layouts and facility integration, ensuring that our complex production environments are efficient, safe, and fully compliant with facility constraints.
This is a high-autonomy role that blends advanced 3D modeling with meticulous spatial coordination. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to translate operational requirements into high-quality construction documents, conduct clash detection analysis to resolve infrastructure conflicts, and act as the primary design representative during the installation and integration phase. If you are an expert at resolving complex spatial conflicts and enjoy working on "next-generation" utility and equipment systems, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Design & BIM Leadership
• Technical Ownership: Develop and maintain high-quality 2D and 3D drawing packages (Revit/AutoCAD). This includes detailed equipment layouts, workflow optimization, and site integration plans.
• Model Coordination: Leverage Navisworks to perform rigorous clash detection, identify spatial conflicts, and ensure seamless integration between new equipment installations and existing facility infrastructure (e.g., utilities, structural).
• Documentation Excellence: Produce comprehensive installation documentation, including elevations, sections, and detailed equipment arrangements. Maintain strict drawing control and ensure all deliverables adhere to site-specific design standards.
Project Execution & Collaboration
• Field Verification: Support field surveys to assess existing conditions, verify site measurements, and ensure final installation aligns with the design intent.
• Cross-Functional Liaison: Partner with engineering, facilities, and construction teams to align designs with operational throughput requirements. Act as a point of contact for RFI and submittal support during the construction phase.
• Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to improve layout standards and design best practices. Provide work estimates to leadership for project scheduling and task planning.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience Baseline: 5+ years of progressive CAD/BIM drafting and layout design experience within a high-tech or process-oriented industrial environment.
• Technical Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; extensive experience with Navisworks for clash detection and model walkthroughs.
• Systems Knowledge: Strong understanding of building systems, facility utility constraints, and workflow optimization in complex manufacturing environments.
Preferred Attributes
• Proven ability to act as a "Lead Designer" on large-scale facility installation projects.
• Exceptional attention to detail-you understand that spatial accuracy is what prevents costly downtime and installation delays in the field.
• Strong "Service-Oriented" mindset; you prioritize clear communication and proactive problem-solving with internal stakeholders.
