Position Summary:
Army JROTC Instructors manage the unit's educational, administrative, and operational aspects and implement policies and procedures administered by the school and the U.S. Army. The SAI is the department head and chief instructor of the JROTC unit. The senior instructor will coordinate with school officials to establish procedures relating to the administration, control, and training of JROTC Cadets.
Essential Functions:
  1. Assess student achievement continuously in order to design appropriate instruction, utilizing JROTC curriculum assessment tasks to verify and document Cadet competencies.
  2. Establish a safe and comfortable environment for students, ensuring strict adherence to school and command safety policies, and enforcing guidelines and consequences for behavior that are reasonable and appropriate for the setting.
  3. Develop a thorough knowledge of the sequenced Army JROTC curriculum (LET 1-4) and implement it in the classroom, using a variety of instructional methods and materials including the 4-phase lesson plan.
  4. Prepare clear and timely lesson plans that demonstrate knowledge of the course(s) of study and contain sound teaching and assessment methods aligned with JROTC program outcomes and core abilities.
  5. Provide appropriate instruction for all students, focusing on leadership development, character education, citizenship, and life skills.
  6. Schedule instructional time according to district and building guidelines, ensuring the completion of required core contact hours for each LET level.
  7. Serve as the Military Property Specialist (MPS) or assist the designated MPS to requisition, store, issue, and account for all government property provided for JROTC activities, including uniforms, demilitarized weapons, and automation equipment.
  8. Participate actively on a team and/or in a department, collaborating with school administrators and counselors to ensure the JROTC unit reflects a cross-section of the school's population.
  9. Keep accurate and detailed records according to district, building, and U.S. Army Cadet Command (USACC) rules, including submitting recurring reports such as Cadet Enrollment, Ethnic Data, and Intentions of Graduates.
  10. Prepare adequately for substitute teachers.
  11. Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned routine duties regularly rotated among other teachers in the school.
  12. Attend all staff meetings, unless excused.
  13. Organize, supervise, and participate in JROTC co-curricular events and special teams (e.g., Drill Team, Color Guard, Marksmanship, Raider Challenge, CyberPatriot, Robotics) outside of the normal academic day.
  14. Ensure Cadets adhere to uniform wear, personal appearance, and conduct standards as prescribed by Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, and enforce the prohibition of hazing, harassment, and fraternization.
  15. Report to parents, in writing and at conferences, at the intervals established by the district and/or building.
  16. Communicate with parents on an ongoing basis, in a positive manner.
  17. Work cooperatively with peers, administrators, and support staff.
  18. Make appropriate referrals of students for supplemental help; attend planning meetings as assigned, and implement individual plans.
  19. Engage in continuous professional growth, including completing the required JROTC 5-step instructor-training plan and attending Brigade Training Workshops and Resident Advanced Recertification Courses.
  20. Learn and implement the administrative procedures that are associated with the teaching assignment; for example, managing activity accounts, applying for field trips, and coordinating transportation for JROTC activities.
  21. Use sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents, and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  22. Serve as a positive role model for students in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior, democratic values, and honorable military service.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Assist with the selection of supplementary teaching materials to enhance the core curriculum content.
  2. Work with student teachers if needed.
  3. Maintain an appropriate personal appearance and wear the prescribed Army uniform in accordance with regulations.
  4. Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district and the U.S. Army.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of non-public information.
  6. Support district initiatives and strategic goals as assigned.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, the Superintendent, or their designee(s), provided they do not conflict with JROTC instruction, operation, and administration.

Qualifications:
  1. Must be a retired or honorably discharged Army officer, warrant officer, or noncommissioned officer with at least 8 years of service, or an active participating member of the selected reserve, meeting the eligibility requirements of the U.S. Army Cadet Command.
  2. Must be certified by the Commanding General, U.S. Army Cadet Command (USACC) to serve as a JROTC Instructor.
  3. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (required for Senior Army Instructor; Associate's degree or higher preferred for Army Instructor).
  4. Must successfully complete a Tier 1 background investigation and periodic re-verification every 5 years as required by the Department of Defense.
  5. Must complete and sign the DD Form 3200, JROTC Instructor Prohibited Activities Acknowledgement form annually.
  6. Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate, provided they comply with U.S. Army JROTC regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Comprehensive knowledge of military training, leadership development, and the Army JROTC curriculum.
  2. Knowledge of a variety of instructional designs, methods, and materials that are developmentally appropriate and age-appropriate for high school students.
  3. Knowledge of the characteristics of adolescents, and the desire and ability to work effectively with them.
  4. Ability to work effectively with other adults in many different situations, including teams of teachers and conferences with parents.
  5. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  6. Effective active listening skills.
  7. Well-developed organizational and problem-solving skills.
  8. Basic knowledge of computer technology, including third-party websites for administrative, budgetary, and curriculum delivery, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.
  9. Knowledge of supply management and inventory procedures for government property.

Equipment Operated:
  1. Various office machines and instructional equipment, such as calculators, copiers, and laminating machines.
  2. Computer/printer and multimedia presentation equipment.
  3. Specific JROTC equipment including drill rifles, air rifles (if applicable), archery equipment, robotics, and Raider Challenge equipment.

Working Conditions:
  1. Potential exposure to blood or other bodily fluids and tissue.
  2. Must be available for education-related purposes and co-curricular JROTC activities outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  3. Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, reach with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.
  4. Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push and pull various items; for example, office supplies, up to 25 lbs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Length of Employment: One-Year Limited Contract.
