Description
The Substitute Teacher for The College of the Florida Keys Academy is a part-time, temporary role focused on providing effective classroom instruction. The ideal candidate is a flexible and adaptable individual who can ensure a consistent and engaging learning environment when the regular teacher is absent. Responsibilities include managing the classroom, following lesson plans, and supporting student learning. Teaching assignments will be determined based on the applicant's educational and work experience. The position reports directly to the principal or their designee at CFK Academy.
Examples of Duties
Essential Job Duties:
  1. Report to the building principal or designee upon arrival at the school to sign in.
  2. Review all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
  3. Take and report attendance for every period.
  4. Report to the office manager for assignments during any planning periods or in the event of an early release.
  5. Maintain, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school and assigned classroom(s).
  6. Teach the lesson(s) outlined in the teacher's lesson plan.
  7. Consult, as appropriate, with the building principal or designee before initiating any teaching or other procedures not specified during the review.
  8. Assume responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class and in common areas during transition periods.
  9. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  10. Follow all policies and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
  11. Monitor and manage student use of technology according to school policy.
  12. Maintain the confidentiality of all information concerning students and staff.
  13. Leave a detailed and informative written report for the returning teacher at the end of the day, summarizing lessons taught, student progress, and any notable incidents or concerns.
  14. Sign out at the front office at the end of each day.
  15. Other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read, understand, and implement detailed lesson plans and school-specific procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to always supervise and maintain the safety and well-being of students.

Qualifications
Education and Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree or 60+ credit hours
  • Minimum age of 18 at the time of application.
  • Ability to pass a Level 2 background check, which includes fingerprinting by a law enforcement agency or properly trained district personnel.

Physical Skills:
  • This role requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • The position primarily involves working indoors in a classroom setting. However, duties may also require supervision of students during outdoor activities. Work may also take place in specialized areas.
    • There may be limited exposure to common classroom allergens such as dust or cleaning supplies.
    • In a lab setting, there may be exposure to approved scientific materials or chemicals under strict supervision and safety protocols.
