Department: Facilities

Reports to: Security Supervisor

Shift Differential Premium: $0.75 per hour for hours worked on weekends, $1.00 per hour for hours worked between 2pm-10pm and $1.75 per hour for hours worked between 10pm-6am

Schedule: Saturday-Wednesday 6am-2pm, off Thursday and Friday

Status: 100% Full-time, Non-exempt, Union

Probation: 90 Days

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Facilities Department is a team of employees responsible for the safety, security, maintenance, and cleanliness of the Centers’ ten locations throughout the Los Angeles area. These facilities cover a wide variety of uses including medical facilities, residential facilities, community rooms, theatres, offices, industrial kitchens, and a coffee shop. The Facilities Department is a great team with hardworking people who enjoy maintaining a wonderful atmosphere for clients and staff who are looking for a community to belong to.

JOB SUMMARY: The Security Officer maintains a safe and secure environment on Center premises. The Security Officer is relied upon for the protection, safeguarding and security of assets, staff, clients, volunteers, visitors, and other people and property on Center grounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Security Operations

  • Ensure that the grounds and facilities are safe and secure for staff and clients.
  • Enforce the Los Angeles LGBT Center policy and procedures.
  • Complete hourly patrol route assignments through campus grounds and parking lot. Report suspicious activities, property damage, and safety hazards to dispatch, supervision, and management.
  • Respond promptly to incidents of fire alarms, panic buttons and disturbances communicated by the Security Officer II position.
  • Escort disruptive individuals off the property. Coordinate with additional security personnel, supervisors, managers, or law enforcement if the situation escalates.
  • Provide assistance to local law enforcement and emergency services.
  • Ensure all buildings are clear of occupants after closing by conducting thorough checks of all rooms, including bathrooms and office spaces.
  • Check and lock all doors, parking lots & driveways, turn off fans, lights, and all-day use equipment, activate alarm systems and secure building.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Complete daily activity report, incident reports or other paperwork before end of shift.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBT people.
  • Minimum 1 year of work experience as a security guard.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with unruly people in a firm and non-antagonizing manner.
  • Availability to work a rotating shift and weekend as scheduled.
  • State of California Guard card.
  • Must be sensitive to the needs and concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and homeless youth and adults.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physically able to stand for periods up to 8 hours.
  • Ability to climb stairs and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Good vision (including color vision and night vision) and hearing.
  • Ability to respond quickly to situations using appropriate intervention techniques, including potential de-escalations, as trained by management.
  • May be required to run in emergency situations.

Health Assessment: A health assessment will be required to ensure that applicants can safely perform job duties without risk to themselves or others.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Current CPR Certificate
  • Experience working with the LGBT community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBT people.
