What is a lending attorney?

Lending attorneys are legal professionals who specialize in laws and regulations related to lending and borrowing money. They assist clients, such as banks, financial institutions, or borrowers, in structuring, negotiating, and documenting loan transactions. Their responsibilities often include reviewing loan agreements, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, and resolving disputes related to lending. Lending attorneys play a crucial role in protecting the interests of their clients and ensuring smooth financial transactions.

What key skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a lending attorney?

To thrive as a Lending Attorney, you need a strong background in commercial lending law, contract negotiation, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and state bar licensure. They must pay close attention to detail to identify potential legal issues and work collaboratively with clients, lenders, and other counsel to resolve them efficiently. Staying organized and proactive in communication is key, as transactions are frequently time-sensitive and require coordination among various stakeholders.

  • Advise clients on leveraged lending, syndicated lending, sponsor finance, and other commercial lending transactions.
  • Coordinate transaction closings, manage due diligence, and oversee financing workstreams.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, opposing counsel, and transaction participants.
  • Collaborate with attorneys across corporate, private equity, restructuring, and capital markets practices on complex financing matters.
  • Provide practical, business-focused legal advice while managing multiple sophisticated transactions simultaneously.

  • Experience with leveraged finance is strongly preferred; experience in syndicated lending, sponsor finance, or other commercial lending transactions is highly desirable.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills involving loan agreements, security documentation, intercreditor agreements, commitment papers, and closing documents.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and client relationship skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex transactions with minimal supervision.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary of $260,000–$390,000, based on experience and location.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) and Roth 401(k) retirement plans.
  • Industry-leading parental leave, adoption, fertility, and family support benefits.
  • Flexible time off and reduced schedule options.
  • Wellness benefits, including employee assistance resources and mental health support.
