PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) mission is to support the NCI at Frederick in their mission to cure cancer and AIDS. FME is responsible for the physical campus - its research laboratory space, administrative space, the infrastructure that supports the buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. In addition, we are responsible for managing, planning, designing, and construction management of renovations at the FNLCR.
JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the repair, fabrication, modification, maintenance, installation and testing of a full range of electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical instruments used in research and industry.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Service equipment including but not limited to CO2 incubators, oscilloscopes, radioactivity scales, spectrophotometers, electronic detectors, freezers, refrigerators, centrifuges, autoclaves, water purification systems, and projection equipment.

• Monitor and maintain scientific equipment alarms, differential pressures, O2 and CO2 building alarms, and the card key system for the facility.
• Review schematic diagrams and equipment manuals to isolate causes of instrument malfunctions.
• Review electronic alignment of instruments according to calibrating standards using electronic testing equipment.
• Disassemble and replace components such as vacuum tubes, thermocouples, transistors, etc.
• Redesign existing circuits to meet special requirements.
• Modify equipment for miniaturization and efficiency of operation.
• Periodically inspect instruments and support systems.
• Conduct standard tests on newly installed support systems.
• Assist in maintaining reserve essential components.
• Work independently or with other craft shops to complete troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
• Occasionally work beyond normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays; subject to 24-hour calls for emergency repairs.
• Contribute to the overall success of Operation and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

• Possession of a high school diploma. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
• In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of vocational or manufacturers' instruction in electronic industrial instrumentation, pneumatic controls, and craft-related experience is required.
• Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 40-50 lbs.; climb stairs and ladders; work involves bending, stooping and working in confined areas; potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment.
• Ability to read prints, diagrams, schematics, programs, and operating instructions.
• Experience in a wide range installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial electrical equipment and systems.
• Knowledge of National Electrical Codes, National Electrical Safety Codes; basic principles and theories of electricity; safety practices in the electrical trade.
• Experience with voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters and other multi-amp testing equipment.
• Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License issued by the state in which the candidate resides. Must have no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months as determined by the Leidos Biomed Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy.
• This position is considered safety sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

• Knowledge of electrical components of scientific/laboratory equipment.
• Experience replacing bearings, brushes, rings, contacts, and armatures of electric motors in scientific equipment.
• Experience with REES Scientific Alarm Systems.
• Experience with Maximo Workorder tracking systems.
• Experience with Fire Alarm systems.
