Data Visualization Specialist

The Data Visualization Specialist performs informatics, and analytics work with a primary focus on the development, maintenance, and enhancement of data dashboards and reporting solutions. The role emphasizes usability, public understanding, and clear communication of data. Responsibilities include gathering, preparing, analyzing, interpreting, visualizing, and managing ICCB data to support decision-making, transparency, and performance monitoring, enabling users to quickly understand trends, outcomes, and impacts without requiring technical or statistical expertise.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Dashboard Design, Development, and Performance:

  • Assists with planning, designing, and defining functional and business requirements for ICCB data dashboards, reports, and visual analytics products, with attention to usability, clarity, and intuitive design for non-technical users.
  • Develops, maintains, and enhances interactive dashboards and reports using business intelligence and data visualization tools.
  • Assess and improve dashboard performance by evaluating data accuracy, usability, and overall effectiveness to ensure alignment with ICCB objectives and stakeholder needs, including initiatives such as Direct Admissions and cross-agency dashboard collaboration

Data Integration, Management, Security, and ILDS:

  • Assists with integrating, validating, and preparing data from multiple ICCB source systems for use in dashboards and reporting environments.
  • Ensures confidentiality, security, and integrity of data used in dashboards and reports, consistent with ICCB data classification and access control policies.
  • Assists with administering dashboard-related data sets, including responsibilities for data quality validation, documentation, refresh scheduling, archiving, and version control.
  • Supports Illinois Longitudinal Data System (ILDS) processes as they relate to reporting, dashboards, and data visualization.

Analytics Support, and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Provides analytics support to divisions, including data preparation, analysis using applicable statistical methods, and development of dashboard-based reports to meet programmatic and operational needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Research and Analytics Division, the Information Technology Division, other ICCB divisions, and external stakeholders to support dashboard development, data integration, and reporting initiatives.
  • Assist External Relations by provisioning accurate and well-structured data for use in public-facing infographics, summary visuals, and simplified data products that help translate complex information into plain-language formats for broad audiences, including the public, legislators, board members, and community partners.

Tools Support, Automation, and Continuous Improvement:

  • Provides first-level support for dashboard and reporting tools, including troubleshooting data refresh issues, resolving display or logic errors, and coordinating with IT on system-level issues as needed.
  • Assists with the responsible adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies to support dashboard development, data analysis, and reporting efficiency, in accordance with approved agency practices.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an educational or related field with a minimum of two courses in statistics.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of educational and/or other research experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with visual and business analytics software such as Power BI or Tableau. 
  • Experience organizing, coordinating, or performing research and planning projects or closely related activities.
  • Experience translating complex data or analysis into clear summaries, visuals, or presentations for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in statistical software such as SAS, SQL, SPSS, or STATA.
  • Experience with, or adequate knowledge of, the Illinois Community College System.

Within SUCSS, each position is assigned to a civil service job classification or exemption that carries its own specific and distinct set of minimum qualifications. Those job qualifications are used in evaluating each applicants’ educational background and experience in order to determine their eligibility for employment. Employment applications filed with other State agencies or employment systems are not acceptable applications for employment with this office.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials are required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. Register will be cleared after position is filled.

This position requires a criminal background investigation and, if applicable, an employment history review. Any offer of employment is contingent upon successfully passing these checks.
