What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal technology consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Technology Consultant, you need a solid understanding of legal processes, IT systems, and project management, often supported by a degree in law, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with e-discovery platforms, case management software, and certifications like Relativity or ACEDS are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to manage change help consultants bridge the gap between legal teams and technology solutions. These skills ensure effective implementation of legal tech tools, driving efficiency and compliance within law firms or corporate legal departments.

What is a legal technology consultant?

Legal Technology Consultants are professionals who help law firms, legal departments, and organizations implement and manage technology solutions to improve legal processes. They advise on software selection, data management, e-discovery, compliance tools, and digital workflows to increase efficiency and reduce risks. Their expertise bridges the gap between legal practice and technology, ensuring that technology investments align with business and regulatory needs. Legal Technology Consultants often provide training, support, and ongoing optimization to ensure successful adoption of new systems.

How does a legal technology consultant typically collaborate with law firms or in-house legal teams?

Legal Technology Consultants work closely with attorneys, paralegals, and IT professionals to understand legal workflows, identify pain points, and recommend technology solutions that improve efficiency. They often facilitate meetings, conduct needs assessments, and lead the implementation or integration of legal software such as case management or e-discovery tools. Collaboration may involve training staff, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that solutions comply with legal and regulatory requirements. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to bridge the gap between legal professionals and technical teams.

Job description

Ready to step into a legal career at the forefront of AI and innovation?
Are you a lawyer or legal professional looking to move beyond traditional practice? Do you enjoy solving complex business challenges, advising senior stakeholders, and helping organisations embrace new technology?
We are looking for a Legal Engineer to partner with corporate legal departments, helping them modernise legal operations through AI-powered solutions, workflow transformation, and strategic advisory.
The Opportunity
This is a highly consultative role that blends legal expertise, technology, and client engagement.
You'll work closely with in-house legal teams to understand their operational priorities, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate how our AI and legal technology solutions can transform the way they work.
If you're passionate about legal innovation, enjoy building trusted relationships, and want to influence the future of corporate legal departments, this is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Partner with corporate legal departments to understand their workflows, strategic priorities, and operational challenges.
  • Advise clients on legal technology, AI adoption, legal operations, and workflow optimisation.
  • Deliver tailored product demonstrations, executive briefings, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Collaborate with Client Managers and Business Development teams to identify opportunities to expand existing customer relationships.
  • Gather customer feedback on product enhancements, emerging AI use cases, and market trends, sharing insights with Product and Engineering teams.
  • Become a trusted advisor to legal leaders navigating digital transformation.
What We're Looking For
You'll have a Juris Doctor (JD) and at least three years' experience in one or more of the following:
  • In-house legal experience within a Fortune 1000 or similarly complex organisation.
  • Legal operations, legal transformation, enterprise consulting, or legal technology implementation supporting corporate legal departments.
  • An Alternative Legal Services Provider (ALSP), advising large enterprise clients on legal strategy and operations.

You'll also bring:
  • A strong understanding of how corporate legal departments operate and the challenges they face.
  • Practical experience using generative AI tools and an appreciation of how AI can improve legal workflows.
  • Confidence discussing AI opportunities, governance, adoption, and risk with both legal and business stakeholders.
  • Experience engaging with General Counsel, Chief Legal Officers, Legal Operations leaders, and other senior decision-makers.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, and consultative problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to travel approximately 50% to support customers and business needs.
Preferred Experience
We're particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
  • Legal operations or legal transformation initiatives.
  • AI implementation and technology adoption.
  • Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM), workflow automation, legal knowledge management, or enterprise legal technology platforms.
  • Enterprise-scale change management and digital transformation programmes.
