They bridge the gap between legal teams and other business units by ensuring that legal services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively. Their responsibilities often include project planning, vendor management, process optimization, and reporting on key metrics. These managers help legal departments operate more like business units by applying project management principles to legal work. They play a key role in driving innovation and operational excellence in the legal industry.

How does a legal operations project manager typically collaborate with legal and cross-functional teams within an organization?

A Legal Operations Project Manager frequently acts as a bridge between the legal department and other business units, such as IT, finance, and procurement. They coordinate project timelines, facilitate communication, and ensure legal projects align with broader organizational goals. Collaboration often involves leading meetings, gathering requirements, and managing stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of legal technology solutions or process improvements. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for streamlining workflows, boosting efficiency, and supporting the legal team's strategic objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal operations project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Operations Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, process optimization, and a solid understanding of legal workflows, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, law, or a related field. Familiarity with legal technology platforms such as contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, e-billing tools, and project management software (e.g., Asana, Smartsheet) is essential, and certifications like PMP or Lean Six Sigma are valued. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure legal teams operate efficiently, deliver projects on time, and drive value within the organization.

Job description

Madrigal is a biopharmaceutical company focused on delivering novel therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a serious liver disease that can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, need for liver transplantation and premature mortality. Every member of our Madrigal team is connected by our shared purpose: leading the fight against MASH.
Madrigal's medication, Rezdiffra (resmetirom), is a once-daily, oral, liver-directed THR-β agonist designed to target key underlying causes of MASH. Rezdiffra is the first and only medication approved by both the FDA and European Commission for the treatment of MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis (F2 to F3). An ongoing Phase 3 outcomes trial is evaluating Rezdiffra for the treatment of compensated MASH cirrhosis (F4c).
Our success is driven by our people. We are building a dynamic, inclusive, and high-performing culture that values scientific excellence, operational rigor, and collaboration. To support our continued growth, we are strengthening our workforce strategy to ensure we have the right talent, at the right time, in the right way.
The Associate Director, Legal Operations & Board Liaison is an operational leader responsible for driving execution excellence across the Legal & Compliance organization while serving as a central coordinator for Board and committee operations. This role blends legal operations, project management, and governance support to ensure Legal & Compliance leaders, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Board of Directors are equipped with accurate information, disciplined processes, and timely decision support.
Operating as a trusted partner to the CEO, ELT, Legal & Compliance leadership, and Corporate Secretary function, this individual brings structure to complex projects and initiatives, ensures governance processes run smoothly, and enables Legal & Compliance to operate with rigor, transparency, and scalability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Operations, Governance & Program Management
  • Lead end-to-end planning and execution of complex Legal and Compliance initiatives, including policy rollouts, system implementations, and cross-functional operational improvements.
  • Translate legal, regulatory, and governance requirements into executable project plans with clear milestones, ownership, dependencies, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Drive prioritization, sequencing, and execution discipline across competing Legal & Compliance initiatives.
  • Support the effective operation of Legal and Compliance governance structures, including meeting management, reporting cadences, and oversight processes.
  • Ensure governance and operational processes align with industry and regulatory expectations and internal Legal & Compliance standards.

2. Board of Directors & Committee Liaison
  • Serve as a primary operational liaison for the Board of Directors and applicable committees (e.g., Audit, Compensation, Nomination & Governance, Scientific), in close partnership with the CEO, Corporate Secretary, and other department/functional representatives.
  • Own end-to-end coordination of Board and committee logistics, including calendars, agendas, materials intake, review workflows, version control, approvals, and timely distribution through the Board portal.
  • Track Board and committee questions, requests, and action items; ensure accurate follow-up and timely responses from Legal, Compliance, and cross-functional partners.
  • Support preparation of Board-level Legal and Compliance updates, dashboards, and governance materials.
  • Support Board members with administrative and other logistical matters as necessary.

3. Executive & Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Act as a central point of coordination between Legal, Compliance, Finance, IT, and key business stakeholders on high-priority initiatives.
  • Facilitate cross-functional working sessions, steering committees, and governance forums to drive alignment, resolve issues, and support decision-making.
  • Anticipate risks, bottlenecks, and resourcing constraints; proactively recommend solutions to leadership.

4. Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
  • Establish and evolve Legal Operations project management standards, tools, templates, and best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline Legal & Compliance processes, improve transparency, and reduce operational friction.
  • Develop dashboards and reporting to provide leadership with clear visibility into project status, risks, and governance obligations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • HS Diploma and 12+ years' experience supporting Legal and/or Executive teams in pharmaceutical or biotech organizations
  • Experience supporting Board of Director activities is required
  • Experience in roles that require a high level of discretion, judgment and executive professionalism required
