Job description

Flagship Pioneering is a scientific innovation engine that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps in human health, sustainability, and beyond.
What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our team of scientists, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and create breakthroughs for the benefit of people and planet.
Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.
Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been named four times to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.
Position Summary
Flagship Pioneering is building a dedicated Legal Operations & Technology function, and we are hiring a second Legal Technology and AI Specialist to help lead its hands-on build-out of AI-powered tools and workflows across the legal department. Reporting to the Director, Legal Operations & Technology, this role combines technical AI engineering skills with legal domain knowledge to design, implement, and maintain AI solutions that accelerate legal service delivery across the organization.
Legal Operations & Technology is the engine that makes the legal function run efficiently - owning the department's technology stack, process design, vendor relationships, and performance metrics. As a foundational member of this new team, you will translate that operational mandate into working technology, partnering closely with attorneys, the broader legal team, and stakeholders across Flagship.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical fluency in AI/ML systems and a working understanding of legal operations gained through direct exposure to in-house legal work. This is a ground-floor opportunity to shape how a leading life sciences and venture creation organization integrates AI into its legal function from day one.
Key Responsibilities
AI Development and Implementation
โ€ข Build, configure, and deploy AI-powered tools and workflows for the legal team, including solutions for contract review, legal research, document drafting, compliance monitoring, and knowledge management.
โ€ข Develop, test, and maintain prompt libraries and prompt engineering frameworks for generative AI systems used across the legal department.
โ€ข Design and implement integrations between AI tools and the Legal Operations &Technology stack (CLM, document management, matter management, e-billing).
โ€ข Prototype and iterate on AI-assisted workflows, moving from proof-of-concept to production deployment.
โ€ข Monitor emerging AI capabilities (including agentic AI workflows) and evaluate their applicability to Flagship's legal operations.
AI Governance and Quality Control
โ€ข Support the development and maintenance of internal AI usage policies and acceptable-use standards for the legal department.
โ€ข Build quality control procedures for AI-generated legal work product, including validation protocols, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, and output review standards.
โ€ข Conduct technical risk assessments on new AI tools, evaluating for data security, confidentiality, bias, and hallucination risk before deployment.
โ€ข Partner with Flagship's IT, information security, and data privacy teams to ensure legal AI tools comply with organizational security standards.
Process, Training, and Adoption
โ€ข Serve as a go-to AI resource for the legal team: design and deliver training sessions on effective use of AI tools, responsible prompting, and output verification.
โ€ข Document and standardize AI-assisted workflows, creating playbooks and best-practice guides that fit within the broader Legal Operations & Technology process framework.
โ€ข Track adoption metrics, define KPIs, and measure the ROI of AI initiatives across the legal team, reporting results to Legal Operations leadership.
Vendor and Tool Evaluation
โ€ข Support Legal Operations & Technology vendor evaluations, product demonstrations, and pilot programs for legal AI platforms and adjacent legal technology.
โ€ข Provide technical assessment of vendor AI capabilities, architecture, and data handling practices.
โ€ข Recommend tools and platforms based on technical merit, integration feasibility, total cost of ownership, and alignment with the legal team's needs.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
โ€ข Partner with business and technology stakeholders across Flagship to identify opportunities where legal AI capabilities can support broader organizational objectives.
โ€ข Contribute to enterprise-wide AI governance initiatives as the Legal Operations & Technology team's technical representative.
โ€ข Collaborate with attorneys and legal operations colleagues to translate legal workflow needs into technical requirements.
Qualifications
Required
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in computer science, AI/ML, data science, engineering, or a related technical field.
โ€ข Demonstrated experience building or engineering AI/ML solutions, including working with large language models, natural language processing, or related technologies.
โ€ข Practical understanding of prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), fine-tuning, and AI system evaluation.
โ€ข Exposure to legal operations, legal workflows, or the legal industry through internship, work experience, or coursework.
โ€ข Familiarity with the legal technology landscape (CLM platforms, AI-assisted research tools, document automation, e-discovery).
โ€ข Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical AI concepts for legal and business audiences.
โ€ข Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize in a fast-paced, build-from-scratch environment.
Preferred
โ€ข Prior internship or work experience in an in-house legal department, law firm, or legal operations team.
โ€ข Experience with legal-specific AI tools (contract AI, legal research platforms, document review systems).
โ€ข Familiarity with responsible AI use policies, digital and data governance, data privacy frameworks (GDPR, state privacy laws) as they relate to AI deployment.
โ€ข Background in or exposure to life sciences, biotech, or venture capital.
โ€ข Experience developing AI governance frameworks, usage policies, or responsible AI guidelines.
โ€ข Coursework or certifications in legal studies, legal technology, or legal operations.
Why This Role
This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of AI engineering and legal operations at a leading life sciences and venture creation organization. As a member of Flagship's Legal Operations & Technology team, you will have direct ownership of how the legal function leverages AI, with visibility across the full portfolio and the autonomy to build solutions from the ground up. For someone with both technical AI depth and an interest in the legal domain, this role offers an accelerated path to becoming a leader in the rapidly growing legal AI and legal operations space.
