AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is skilled work involving responsibility for the complete overhaul and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment which, depending on where the position exists, may include heavy-duty equipment such as bulldozers and graders. The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Automotive Mechanic Helpers.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including buses, cars, trucks, tractors and other road maintenance equipment;
  • Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers, etc.;
  • Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches, and front and rear axles;
  • Adjusts connecting rod and bearings;
  • May be responsible to road test or trouble-shoot a variety of motorized equipment;
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • May perform minor body and fender work;
  • Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters;
  • Tunes engine and sets the timing;
  • May attach and remove snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
  • May work as a motor equipment operator when directed;
  • May drive school bus runs when required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of standard modern automotive repair methods, including diesel engines, and of the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to make difficult repair to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:
Eligibility for the appropriate level New York State operator's license at time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment.
Note: If the position involves the operation of school buses, candidates must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Drivers as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of New York State Commissioner of Education
