Ledger information

What is a ledger in accounting?

Ledgers are comprehensive records in accounting that detail all financial transactions for a company, organized by account. They serve as the central repository for all monetary activities, including sales, purchases, income, and expenses. Each entry in the ledger corresponds to a journal entry and helps ensure the accuracy and completeness of a business's financial statements. Ledgers are crucial for tracking the financial health of an organization and are typically divided into subcategories such as the general ledger, accounts receivable ledger, and accounts payable ledger.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ledger accountant?

To thrive as a Ledger Accountant, you need a solid grasp of accounting principles, attention to detail, and proficiency in bookkeeping, often backed by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and sometimes certification like CPA, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication help you stand out in the role. These capabilities are essential for ensuring accurate financial records, compliance, and smooth financial operations within an organization.

How does a ledger clerk typically collaborate with other departments in an organization?

Ledger Clerks frequently interact with colleagues from accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll to ensure that all financial records are accurate and up to date. They may also coordinate with operations or procurement teams to clarify transaction details or resolve discrepancies. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as Ledger Clerks often serve as the link between various departments to maintain accurate financial documentation and support the month-end or year-end closing processes.

What is the difference between Ledger vs Bookkeeper?

AspectLedgerBookkeeper
Primary RoleMaintains and updates financial records in the ledgerRecords daily financial transactions and manages bookkeeping tasks
CredentialsOften requires accounting knowledge, certifications varyTypically requires basic accounting or bookkeeping certifications
Work EnvironmentAccounting departments, finance firmsSmall businesses, accounting firms, or in-house finance teams
Industry UsageUsed across industries for financial record-keepingCommonly employed in small to medium businesses

While both roles involve financial record-keeping, a Ledger is a specific component of accounting that involves maintaining detailed financial entries, whereas a Bookkeeper handles the daily recording of transactions. Bookkeepers often use ledgers as part of their work, but their scope includes broader bookkeeping tasks.

Job description

About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling - keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we're delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
General Ledger Accountant
The General Ledger Accountant supports the general ledger accounting function for Redwood's global organization. The role contributes to month-end close, financial reporting, and internal controls, working closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Financial Planning & Analysis. It's a hands-on position within a fast-growing company, with exposure across the full accounting cycle rather than a single narrow function. This is a strong fit for an accountant early in their career who wants breadth and real ownership of the work.
Hours
Full-time
Responsibilities will include:
  • Support the month-end close process by preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with financial statement preparation
  • Maintain the general ledger system, posting journal entries and ensuring the accuracy of account balances
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis, including variance analysis and trend identification
  • Process intercompany transactions and reconcile intercompany balances to resolve discrepancies
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of internal controls over the general ledger process, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency across the function
  • Provide documentation and support for internal and external audits, responding to inquiries and requests as needed
  • Partner with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Financial Planning & Analysis on cross-functional initiatives and accurate financial reporting

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of relevant accounting and financial reporting experience
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in accounting or finance preferred
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting requirements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • A Passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
