Job description

Position Purpose
The ECMO Coordinator will be responsible for performing day-to-day ECMO program operational oversight. This is to include clinical training for ECMO staff, orientation facilitation for ECMO Specialists, establishing and measuring ECMO staff competencies, and the development of ECMO policies, procedures, and guidelines under the direction of the ECMO medical director. Perform the functions of the ECMO Specialist when necessary to meet pump staffing needs and function as an expert for all ECMO aspects of patient care and delivery in collaboration with physicians, surgeons, and the multidisciplinary teams.
Nature and Scope
• Maintain all ECMO equipment and supplies including equipment and supply purchasing in collaboration with administration.
• Takes call 24/7 in weekly or bi-weekly rotation with the 2nd ECMO Coordinator with a 45 min call time to the hospital.
• Will be present at and facilitate every ECMO cannulation under the direction of the cannulating ECMO physician.
• Participates in ECMO consultations when on call.
• Participates in identifying learning needs and designs, plans, and implements effective and appropriate learning techniques to ensure clinical competency of ECMO providers.
• Coordinates lectures, in-services, simulation, and wet lab training to ensure ECMO provider competency.
• Coordinated in-house and on-call schedules with the administrative team to ensure appropriate staffing for the ECMO program and patient care delivery.
• Serves as a subject matter expert or has the ability to consult with experts when needed to identify potential emergencies and complication prevention for immediate resolution.
• Demonstrates a superior working knowledge of ECMO therapy including but not limited to the ECMO circuity and pump, adjustments to flow, sweep, FiO2, anticoagulation therapy set by the physician, point of care testing, patient monitoring systems, ABG interpretation, and related policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Assists with the initiation of ECMO, the course of ECMO management, weaning and decannulation, and other therapies including but not limited to circuit and/or circuit component changes, priming, blood and medication administration to the circuit as permitted by licensure under the direction of the ECMO provider.
• Maintains regular effective communication with the physicians, hospital and clinical staff, direct supervisors, ECMO specialists, and other multidisciplinary personnel as directed in performing the job duties, responsibilities, and requirements when problems arise with equipment and/or personnel as established by Renown policies and protocols.
• Works in coordination with the ECMO coordinator through communication and shared responsibilities covering all aspects of the ECMO program.
• Completes all required documentation required by the coordinator according to Renown policies, protocols, and guidelines, including but not limited to ECMO charges and ELSO and quality data collection and reporting.
• Assists in data collection and quality improvement initiatives and research related activities related to ECMO.
• Collaborates with other ECMO centers, attends ECMO meetings and education offerings, and ECMO conference to develop a sound ECMO network, and remain up to date on ECMO protocols, management techniques, and technology.
• Assist in managing standards and protocols, Joint Commission requirements, and other applicable regulatory requirements pertaining to the ECMO Program.
• Monitors and orders ECMO inventory and equipment to ensure ability to maintain ECMO census as guided by Renown.
• Performs ECMO Specialist clinical coverage when required to maintain safe ECMO patient staffing.
• Travels with ECMO patients for both intra and inter-hospital transports
• Notifies finance of each active ECMO case
• Facilitates ECMO M&M auditing.
• Audits ECMO Specialist charting to ensure compliance with Renown policy and protocol

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience:
Required:
• At least 3 years clinical critical care experience
• At least 2 years' experience as and ECMO Specialist
Preferred:
• 5 years clinical critical care experience
• 1 or more years' experience as an ECMO Coordinator/Clinical Specialist
License(s):
Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Board Registered Nurse License, Registered Respiratory Therapist Licenses, or Perfusion License.
State of Nevada Point of Care Analyst license or equivalent as defined in NAC. To include Director of point of care, General supervisor of point of care, Clinical laboratory technologist, Blood gas technician, blood gas technologist required within 6 months of hire.
Certification(s):
Current AHA BLS and ACLS certification required at time of hire.
Required:
• Satisfactory completion of the internal ECMO training program required within 6 months of hire.
Preferred
• Adult Certified ECMO Specialist (CES-A)
• ELSO Adult ECMO Practitioner Certification (E-AEC)
Computer / Typing:
Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
