What are Learning Pathways?

Learning pathways are structured sequences of educational experiences designed to help individuals acquire specific skills or knowledge in a particular area. They typically consist of a series of courses, modules, or activities that build upon each other, allowing learners to progress at their own pace. Learning pathways can be customized to meet different goals, whether for career advancement, skill development, or personal enrichment. Organizations and educational institutions often use learning pathways to guide employees or students through targeted training programs.

How do professionals in Learning Pathways roles typically collaborate with subject matter experts and instructional designers?

Professionals working in Learning Pathways often collaborate closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure that learning content is accurate, relevant, and aligned with organizational goals. They also work hand-in-hand with instructional designers to structure curricula, select appropriate delivery methods, and create engaging learning experiences. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and collaborative planning are common, allowing teams to iterate on content and ensure that learning pathways are both effective and adaptable to learner needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Learning Pathways Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Pathways Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, and adult learning theory, typically supported by a degree in education or instructional design. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate, and relevant certifications such as CPLP or ATD are commonly required. Strong communication, project management, and analytical skills help tailor learning experiences and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure the creation of effective, engaging, and measurable learning solutions that drive organizational and learner success.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., engineering, manufacturing, HR)
  • Assist with intake, prioritization, and project tracking for learning requests
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Learning Experience Design, Education, Psychology, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Foundational understanding of instructional design principles and adult learning theory

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience (academic, internship, or project-based) in creating learning content or training materials
  • Familiarity with authoring tools (e.g., Articulate, Rise, Captivate, or similar)
  • Exposure to LMS platforms
  • Experience working with subject matter experts
  • Interest in technology, engineering, or manufacturing environments
