Instructional Assistant Job Description

Position Title: Instructional Assistant

Reports To: Principal 

Position Summary

The Instructional Assistant supports the educational program by working collaboratively with teachers and staff to provide high-quality instruction, maintain a safe and positive learning environment, and support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of students. This position requires flexibility, teamwork, and a commitment to meeting the needs of all learners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Assist teachers in delivering small-group instruction.
  • Reinforce classroom lessons and learning activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Prepare instructional materials and classroom resources.
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to the teacher.
  • Support students with academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Utilize technology and instructional resources to enhance student learning.

Student Supervision and Safety

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, buses, and during school activities.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
  • Monitor student behavior and implement school-wide expectations and procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to student needs and emergencies.
  • Help ensure the physical safety and emotional well-being of all students.

Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialists, administrators, and other support staff.
  • Participate in professional learning and staff meetings as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues regarding student needs and progress.
  • Support school initiatives and contribute positively to the school culture.

Transportation Support

  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or be willing to obtain one upon employment.
  • Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed to ensure the safe transportation of students.
  • Maintain all required certifications and training related to school bus operation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with arrival, dismissal, and other school-wide duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
