What is a lead video editor?

A Lead Video Editor is a senior professional responsible for overseeing the video editing process, managing a team of editors, and ensuring that the final video content meets creative, technical, and client standards. They collaborate closely with directors, producers, and other stakeholders to interpret project goals, provide creative input, and maintain consistency in style and quality. In addition to hands-on editing work, they often supervise workflows, mentor junior editors, and troubleshoot technical issues. Their expertise helps guide the overall vision of a project from raw footage to polished final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead video editor?

To thrive as a Lead Video Editor, you need advanced video editing skills, a solid understanding of visual storytelling, and a degree or relevant experience in film, media, or a related field. Mastery of editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and motion graphics programs like After Effects is typically required. Strong leadership, creative collaboration, and effective communication skills help manage teams and realize a shared creative vision. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality content on deadline and ensuring consistency across projects.

Job description

The Lead Video Editor sits at the intersection of creative execution and production at WorkMoney Media. This role partners closely with the CEO, EVP Production, and leadership team to bring our stories to life - shaping everything from premium longform projects to daily, cross-platform brand content.
This is a highly collaborative, hands-on role that balances editing with leadership. The Lead Video Editor would execute the tone and standard set by the CEO and creative producers for how our content looks and feels, while managing the flow of work across internal teams and freelance editors, motion designers, and post-production partners. From stepping into the edit on key projects to guiding others through feedback and final delivery, this role plays a central part in how our content comes together. They also own and refine our post-production workflows and file organization systems, ensuring projects are structured, accessible, and built for efficiency across the team.
This role is ideal for someone who is both creative and operational-someone who enjoys being in the work while also stepping back to keep projects moving. The right person brings strong editorial instincts, a clear point of view on storytelling, and a natural ability to organize people and process. They take pride in delivering high-quality work, collaborate seamlessly across teams, and are energized by building alongside a thoughtful, mission-driven group.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to give clear, thoughtful, and actionable feedback
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced, creative environment
  • Comfortable balancing hands-on editing work with project and team management responsibilities
