Lead Network Engineer - Cloud Networks
Location
Richmond, VA or Lynchburg, VA

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Lead Network Engineer to play a key role in enabling cloud adoption and modernization initiatives across a complex enterprise environment.
This position serves as a critical bridge between infrastructure architecture and engineering execution, helping translate strategic cloud networking designs into scalable, secure, and operationally sound solutions. You will work closely with architects, engineers, and operations teams to ensure cloud networking capabilities align with enterprise standards, performance objectives, and business requirements.
This role is not solely focused on implementation. Instead, you will act as a trusted technical advisor and subject matter expert, guiding cloud network design decisions, providing implementation direction, and helping resolve complex networking challenges across cloud and hybrid environments.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Network Architecture & Implementation
  • Translate infrastructure and platform architecture into detailed cloud network implementation requirements, including:
    • Virtual network design
    • Subnet architecture
    • Routing strategies
    • Network segmentation
    • Traffic flow management
  • Serve as a technical liaison between Architecture and Engineering teams to ensure successful execution of cloud networking initiatives.
  • Provide guidance on private connectivity solutions and secure communication patterns within cloud environments.
  • Support hybrid connectivity between cloud and on-premises environments, including routing, DNS, and network integration strategies.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of cloud networking standards, design patterns, and implementation guidelines.
Operations & Troubleshooting
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex cloud networking issues, including:
    • Connectivity failures
    • DNS resolution problems
    • Routing issues
    • Performance bottlenecks
    • Latency concerns
  • Partner with operations teams to perform root cause analysis and improve overall network reliability and resiliency.
  • Identify opportunities to improve performance, standardization, operational supportability, and service quality.
Engineering Enablement
  • Provide technical guidance to developers and business teams on the secure, efficient, and cost-effective use of cloud networking capabilities.
  • Support infrastructure automation initiatives and continuously improve tooling and platform capabilities to meet evolving business needs.
  • Promote best practices for cloud network design, implementation, and operational management.
Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in network engineering, cloud networking, or related infrastructure roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • AWS networking services (VPCs, routing, connectivity)
    • Azure networking services (VNets, routing, connectivity)
    • TCP/IP networking
    • DNS
    • Network segmentation
    • Routing technologies including BGP
  • Experience designing and supporting hybrid cloud networking architectures.
  • Experience implementing secure private connectivity solutions across cloud environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting experience across cloud and on-premises network environments.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code concepts and tools such as Terraform.
  • Strong collaboration skills across architecture, engineering, and operations teams.
  • Ability to translate high-level technical designs into actionable implementation guidance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
