What are Lead Game Developers?

Lead Game Developers are experienced professionals who oversee the development of video games, managing both the technical and creative aspects of projects. They coordinate teams of programmers, artists, designers, and other developers to ensure that the game is completed on time and meets quality standards. Their responsibilities often include project planning, task delegation, problem-solving, and serving as the primary point of contact between team members and upper management. Lead Game Developers need strong leadership, communication, and technical skills to guide their teams through complex development cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Game Developer, you need advanced programming skills, deep knowledge of game design principles, and experience managing development teams, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, source control systems, and possibly certifications in project management are highly valuable. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure cohesive team collaboration, efficient project delivery, and the creation of high-quality, engaging games.

How does a Lead Game Developer typically collaborate with other departments during a project's lifecycle?

A Lead Game Developer works closely with artists, designers, producers, and quality assurance teams to ensure that the game's vision is executed consistently across all departments. They often facilitate regular meetings to align technical goals with creative direction, resolve cross-functional challenges, and communicate project updates. Effective collaboration involves balancing technical feasibility with creative ideas, making compromises when needed, and ensuring that the team stays on schedule. This role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Job description

We take play seriously. We're looking for curious adventurers ready to find their party, fueled by imagination and drive to build what's never been built before. At Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, you'll collaborate with passionate teams to reimagine our iconic brands and create experiences that spark joy, connection, and community through the magic of play. This is your chance to shape legendary play that lasts a lifetime.
Are you an experienced tabletop RPG designer with the demonstrated ability to lead major RPG products from inception through publication?
We are seeking a Senior Game Developer to provide in-depth review and quality control of D&D products produced outside the Game Design team. In this role, you'll ensure that game content is consistent, functional, and fun. As necessary, you'll also work to design and write meaningful portions of D&D products. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, are excited to work on a wide variety of D&D offerings, and can work hands-on to bring content up to high internal standards, this position is for you!
Location & Work Arrangement
This role is based in Renton, WA and follows a hybrid schedule, with in-office collaboration Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week.
What You'll Do:
  • Act as the primary design review stakeholder for second-party content, ensuring external partners' work meets D&D's rules standards, quality bar, and brand alignment
  • Provide design and development support across internal products, contributing content and product refinement
  • Serve as a deep subject matter expert in D&D's rules systems, design conventions, and mechanical standards
  • Apply expertise to evaluate and elevate content across multiple products and formats
  • Collaborate with producers, project leads, and graphic designers to build project schedules
  • Review game content at key pipeline stages to identify issues with rules clarity, mechanical consistency, and internal standards
  • Apply combined design and editing experience to strengthen rules language, catch inconsistencies, and improve usability across manuscripts and final files
  • Represent Wizards of the Coast and D&D at events and in interviews
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in the liberal arts, or equivalent professional experience
  • 6+ years developing RPG products with significant credits on products from known publishers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong familiarity with Dungeons & Dragons and proficiency in the fifth edition rules
  • A track record of developing innovative and balanced game mechanics
  • Experience collaborating with and guiding both in-house and external designers
  • An eye for detail and dedication to excellence
