Job Summary
The Dean of Students is a quasi-administrative leadership role designed for licensed teachers who wish to support student success and school-wide initiatives without assuming the full responsibilities of an administrator. Focused on student academic, behavioral, and positive character development, the Dean assists the principal by overseeing discipline, attendance, and student engagement efforts. The Dean also plays a central role in family communication, staff collaboration, and school culture building.
Essential Functions
- Student Support and Behavior Management:
- Monitor and address student behavior and enforce school policies.
- Work with school social workers, psychologists, and teachers to develop and implement behavior intervention plans.
- Promote and model positive behavior expectations aligned with schoolwide systems such as PBIS or restorative practices.
- Instructional Leadership and Student Dispositions:
- Assist in promoting instructional improvement and student achievement across K-8 settings.
- Support professional development initiatives, teacher coaching, and data-informed decisions that increase student learning outcomes.
- Facilitate programs supporting student behavioral health, including resilience, conflict resolution, and positive social dispositions.
- Lead or coordinate character-building curriculum, student assemblies, and school climate activities.
- Attendance and Engagement:
- Track student attendance and implement interventions to reduce chronic absenteeism and tardiness.
- Communicate with families to identify barriers to attendance and provide appropriate support or resources.
- Organize and attend family meetings related to behavior, discipline, or academic concerns.
- Compliance and Designee Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Special Education team to ensure IEPs are implemented with fidelity and in accordance with IDEA.
- Serve as an LEA representative during IEP meetings when designated by the principal, with authority to commit resources within that setting.
- Work with counselors, teachers, and families to evaluate and implement 504 accommodation plans in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Administrative Site Support:
- Assist with student supervision during school hours and extracurricular events.
- Support administrative decision-making and serve as acting administrator for short-term site management when designated.
Non-Essential Functions
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Instructional Mastery: Strong understanding of instructional practices, curriculum, and assessment.
- Behavioral Intervention: Experience supporting student behavior through evidence-based strategies.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Ability to provide leadership and collaborate across school teams and diverse student populations.
- Compliance: Working knowledge of IDEA and 504 compliance.
Required Education, Training, and Qualifications
- Requires one of the following:
- A current Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) in a relevant license area (Elementary, Secondary, or Special Education).
- A current equivalent professional educator license from another state or country; individuals hired under this provision must obtain a Utah Professional Educator License by the end of their first school year of employment with the District.
Required Prior Experience
- Minimum of three years of successful professional educator experience.
Assigned Decision Making
- LEA Authority: Authorized to commit district resources during IEP meetings when serving as the designated LEA representative.
- Short-Term Site Management: Authority to manage immediate school site safety and student supervision in the brief absence of the Principal.
Non-Supervisory Interaction
- Regularly collaborates with school social workers, psychologists, counselors, and teachers to coordinate student interventions and 504/IEP compliance.
Supervisory Responsibility
- This position provides functional guidance and mentoring to staff regarding behavior expectations and classroom management.
- The Dean of Students has no formal authority to perform educator evaluations or make hiring/termination decisions.
Budget Responsibility
- No direct budget authority; supports the Principal in identifying resource needs for student interventions.
Working Environment
- Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities in all types of weather and air quality.
- Requires physical mobility to monitor transitions and respond to incidents.
Physical Requirements
- Communication: Ability to talk or hear.
- Mobility: Requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Vision: Ability to focus; includes close, distance, and color vision.
- Lifting: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
