Layer3 information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Layer 3 Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Layer 3 Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols (such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP), routing concepts, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with network hardware (routers, switches), network monitoring tools, and certifications like Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIS are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure secure, efficient, and reliable network performance in complex IT environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Layer3 network engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Layer3 network engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex routing protocols, troubleshooting network congestion, and ensuring seamless integration between different network layers. Staying current with evolving technologies and maintaining strong documentation practices can help address these issues. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as security and systems administrators, is also crucial to quickly identify and resolve network anomalies. Continuous learning and hands-on experience with network simulation tools can further enhance problem-solving skills in this role.

What are Layer3 jobs?

Layer3 jobs typically refer to positions that involve working with the network layer (Layer 3) of the OSI model, which is responsible for routing data packets between devices across different networks. Professionals in these roles often manage routers, configure IP addressing, and implement routing protocols to ensure efficient and secure data transmission. Common job titles include network engineer, network administrator, and network architect. These roles are critical in designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex network infrastructures for organizations.

What is the difference between Layer3 vs Network Engineer?

AspectLayer3Network Engineer
Required CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise networks, ISPsCorporate offices, data centers, service providers
Industry UsageNetworking hardware, routing, switchingNetwork design, implementation, troubleshooting

Layer3 specialists focus on routing, switching, and network infrastructure at the OSI model's third layer, often working with routers and switches. Network Engineers also handle network design and troubleshooting but may have a broader scope including network security and infrastructure planning. Both roles require similar certifications and work environments, but Layer3 roles are more specialized in routing protocols and network hardware configuration.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

The Opportunity:

With the explosion of Internet TV, Netflix has grown to serve over 300 million paid subscribers in over 190 countries worldwide. The Cloud Infrastructure organization's mission is to increase the fleet-wide agility, scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our Platform. We are responsible for one of the largest Cloud Network footprints built on AWS and constantly pushing boundaries on bleeding-edge technology with co-innovation in driving IPv6 at hyperscale.

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineering Leader who will lead and grow a team of software developers within the Cloud Network Engineering organization. This team is responsible for delivering secure, performant, and reliable connectivity and reachability through policy-driven cloud governance and observability software. The team provides Layer2 - Layer4 networking solutions that ensure consistent network scalability and secure traffic management throughout the Netflix ecosystem by writing software that abstracts AWS primitives and the complexities of resilience, security, routing, and insights.

You will lead a stunning team of Software Engineers who tackle some of the largest cloud networking challenges in the industry. The team re-architects the approach to managing and exposing modern cloud connectivity/traffic features. You will own some of our key bets, ship overarching abstractions, and create APIs that enable Netflix developers to completely change how they interact with the products and infrastructure delivered by the broader cloud infrastructure organization.

This team has reliably enabled Netflix's hyper cloud growth by co-innovating with AWS, driving technologies like IPv6, Hybrid infrastructure, and delivering eBPF-based products to create novel solutions to classic problems, like NAT64. If you're looking for a deeply technical and highly dynamic opportunity that will have an outsized impact on how Netflix scales in the future, we'd love to talk to you!

What you will do:

  • Own the Tier 0 network governance layer that determines how every Netflix workload connects, from placement and addressing through security group policy and firewall enforcement.

  • Build, scale, and mentor a cohesive team of amazing engineers.

  • Form strong cross-functional partnerships driven by trust to achieve alignment with many engineering teams and ensure our solutions meet their needs, while maintaining our focus on agility, scalability, reliability, and efficiency.

  • Build Netflix's network observability capability, evolving eBPF-based flow capture and IP topology into a full L3/L4 visibility platform that engineering teams use to understand, debug, and secure their traffic.

  • Drive the transition from per-service network configuration to opinionated, policy-driven defaults, making the secure path the easy path for thousands of microservices without requiring each team to be a networking expert.

What we are looking for:

  • A product-focused leader who understands what customers want and has a passion for building critical infrastructure platforms.

  • Leadership that treats Engineering process as a product, identifies friction in how the team builds, ships, and fixes software.

  • Strong software development focus with past work abstracting away complexity and guiding teams to deliver simple, effective solutions to customers.

  • Outcome-focused mindset and able to think from first principles.

  • Experience building and operating complex distributed systems at scale. We use AWS, experience with building/consuming the networking stack of a public cloud is a plus.

  • Shipping through organizational complexity. Proactively resolves cross-team dependencies, migration sequencing, competing priorities. Builds consensus and influences peer teams to move initiatives forward.

  • Solid understanding of Layer3/Layer4 networking, and network security is a plus.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $436,000.00 - $791,000.00. This compensation range will vary based on location.

Netflix provides comprehensive benefits including Health Plans, Mental Health support, a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer match, Stock Option Program, Disability Programs, Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts, Family-forming benefits, and Life and Serious Injury Benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off. See more details about our Benefits here.

Netflix is a unique culture and environment. Learn more here.

Inclusion is a Netflix value and we strive to host a meaningful interview experience for all candidates. If you want an accommodation/adjustment for a disability or any other reason during the hiring process, please send a request to your recruiting partner.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and celebrate diversity, recognizing that diversity builds stronger teams. We approach diversity and inclusion seriously and thoughtfully. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, ancestry, national origin, caste, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, age, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic makeup, marital status, or military service.
