Job description

JOB TITLE: Baseball Varsity Assistant Coach 

STATUS: Part-Time (Non-Exempt), not to exceed 190 hours of coaching hours.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director   

Organization Overview

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.

Position Overview

Position where a variety of duties are performed relative to California Interscholastic Federation. The assistant coach is responsible for various aspects of the baseball program, such as recruiting students within the school to participate in the program, running practices, coaching team members. Athletic coaches provide guidance on physical training, fundamental rules, regulations and skills and uses different strategies to ensure individual and team success. In addition, coaches must keep him or herself abreast with the current knowledge on various sports techniques and equipment. The coach should conduct training to minimize the injuries during the competition so that the athletes remain physically fit. The coach ensures adherence to the CIF and school policies, maintains discipline and recommends changes to Athletic Director or School Administration. Coaches maintain documents related to injuries that need immediate medical attention. Coaches must keep a track of various schedules at the city, state and national level. Coaches should ensure that team building spirit is developed to gain success in any sports event.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Accepts total responsibility for the specified sports program from grades ninth to twelfth.

  • Assists the Site Director and Site Athletic Director in the selection of assistant coaches for that sport.

  • Assists the Site Athletic Director in monitoring performance of assistant coaches in his/her charge.

  • Provides the following to the Site Athletic Director before the season begins:

    • An eligibility list of players for certification purposes

    • A complete schedule of events for the year

    • Proof of physicals and insurance forms on each player before the player’s first participation in practice per CIF regulations.

  • Accepts responsibility for the enrollment, physical conditioning and supervisor of players in that sport.

  • Makes systematic grade, attendance and behavior checks on players to ensure their remaining eligible.

  • Supervises athletes during all games/matches and until the building and facilities are locked and secured after the conclusion of an event.

  • Provide the Site Athletic Direction with a list of students who complete the season in good standing for forwarding to the counselors.

  • Assist students to be academically eligible to complete in high school athletics.

  • Submits end of season report with requested information to the Site Athletic Director within one week of the conclusion of the season. (includes accounting of all sports equipment)

  • Works with coaches at other levels and other schools to develop a consistent program.

  • Accepts responsibility for teaching proper behavior, conduct and decorum on and off the athletic field or court.

  • Attends meetings, workshops, and clinics sponsored through CIF.

  • Assists in scheduling and ensures team participation in all CIF events and develops full schedules.

  • Ensures minimum student athletes participation numbers are maintained as directed by the Director of Athletics.

  • Responsible for athletic fields and facilities used by the head coach.

  • Demonstrates loyalty to the athletic program.

  • Is present and on time for all events, including practice, unless excused or when an emergency arises.

  • Services through the complete season for one sport before beginning a new one.

  • Ensures that the sportsmanship is at the core of athletic program.

  • Maintains constant checks on students behavior and grades

  • Recruits within the school, trains, and works with the assistant coaches.

  • Helps coordinate the development, and promotion of the softball program.

  • Holds tryouts in either November or early December (at least two days).

  • Helps organize and schedules practice sessions.

  • Travels on the bus with the team if needed by the head coach

  • Helps collect Blue slips to verify students have checked in with their teachers about going to games.

  • Helps hand out and collects softball jerseys at the end of the season.

  • Maintains and secures softball equipment

  • Determines game strategy based on team’s abilities

  • If fundraising, completes the proper paperwork.

  • Holds a preseason meeting with student-athletes 

  • Follows established procedures in regards to an injury

  • Represents Vaughn High School in a professional manner and on time to practices and games.

  • Assists the Athletic Director in collecting paperwork and any other necessary duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • HS Diploma

  • Resume showing coaching experience (paid or volunteer work)

  • Possession of a valid CPR and First Aid Certificate. 

  • Must possess effective coaching techniques

  • Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies and techniques of the sport.

  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, coaches, parents and students.

Compensation and Benefits 

  • $17.87 per hour

Additional Information

Upon receiving an offer of employment: 

  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ) 

  • Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment

  • Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
