Job Summary
This position is with the DC Department of Corrections (DOC), Central Detention Facility Maintenance Division. This position duties and responsibilities required of a position with the primary responsibility for performing a combination of skilled maintenance services in areas of carpentry, painting, and plastering, along with semi-skilled maintenance service workers, such as masonry, and locksmith.
Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent performs the full range of assignments, which typically include the performance of visual examination and operational testing in trade work, such as those described in the following areas:
PAINTER - Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required, for example, glossy finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thickness and levels. Prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices, including those designed to give special effects.
CARPENTER - Repairs, constructs, remodels, and maintains a variety of wooden structures, representative of which are frameworks, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior and exterior trim; staircases, trusses, and beams, where accuracy, spacing, and fit are essential and structural soundness or appearance are important. Plans and lay out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Selects lumber, materials, and supplies. Measures and cut materials to the required lengths and dimensions. Insulates materials, floor and window frames, and interior and exterior trim. Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently, and determines the layout and work sequences.
PLASTERER - Work involves the mixing, application, and finishing of plaster surfaces in the construction and repair of interior walls and ceilings and stucco exterior walls. Performs new plastering on all types of backgrounds such as metal, wood or gypsum lath, wallboard, and masonry surfaces, as well as repair and patching of plaster and stucco surfaces.
MASONRY WORKER - Maintains, repairs, alters, and constructs exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone. Plans and lay out the work to be done, selects the proper tools; determines material to be used, and accomplishes the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices. Lays common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks, chimneys, fireplace, manholes, boilers, and catch basins. Lays whole brick in straight, horizontal rows and a variety of more complex brickwork, such as circular smokestacks.
LOCKSMITH WORKER - The work involves participating in the repair, overhaul, modification, testing, and installation of a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. The work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms. Performs routine maintenance, overhauls, and repair of standard types of mechanical locking devices such as mortise, rim, key-in the-knob, deadbolt, office equipment, padlocks, and emergency exit locks.
Qualifications and Education
ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
Use of Measuring Instruments
Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Knowledge of Materials
Licenses and Certifications
A valid driver's license is required.
Working Conditions/Environment
Work is performed either inside or outside a correctional facility and occasionally required to work in bad weather. The incumbent is exposed to all types of working conditions, such as dirt, bad smelling fumes, sprays, sawdust, grease high ladders, rooftops, etc. Frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, infections, flying splinter and chips, and damage to clothing and shoes, and may be expose to possibility of broken bones.

Tour of Duty: Monday Friday 6:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m. May require weekends as needed.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position may be covered by a collective bargaining agreement. You may be required to pay an agency service fee through payroll deduction.
Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

Residency Preference: When claiming residency preference, you are required, and must agree in writing, to maintain bona fide District residency for a period of seven (7) consecutive years from the effective date of employment.
