What is a large animal veterinary assistant?

A Large Animal Veterinary Assistant helps veterinarians care for livestock and farm animals such as horses, cattle, pigs, and sheep. Their duties include restraining animals, assisting with medical procedures, cleaning equipment, administering medications, and handling routine care tasks. They often work on farms, ranches, or veterinary clinics, sometimes traveling to different locations. This role requires physical stamina, basic animal care knowledge, and strong communication skills to assist both vets and animal owners.

What does a large animal veterinary assistant do?

A typical day for a Large Animal Veterinary Assistant involves assisting veterinarians during farm visits or in-clinic procedures, restraining animals safely, preparing and cleaning equipment, and keeping detailed records. You may also help with administering medications, collecting samples, and providing basic animal care such as feeding or monitoring recovery. The role often requires working outdoors and traveling to farms or ranches, sometimes under challenging weather conditions. Teamwork is crucial, as you’ll routinely coordinate with veterinarians, technicians, and animal owners. This varied and hands-on work environment offers valuable experience and exposure to a wide range of large animal care practices.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a large animal veterinary assistant?

To thrive as a Large Animal Veterinary Assistant, you need practical animal handling skills, basic knowledge of animal health, and at least a high school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job training or experience with large animals is highly valued. Familiarity with veterinary medical equipment, safety protocols, and animal restraint techniques is important, and some employers may require certification in animal care or first aid. Strong communication, teamwork, and physical stamina are essential soft skills for supporting veterinarians and interacting with clients. These skills ensure safe, efficient care for animals, effective team collaboration, and positive client experiences in demanding agricultural or clinical environments.

How much does a large animal veterinary assistant make?

The average salary for a large animal veterinary assistant is around $25,000 to $35,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced assistants or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages. Many assistants work in farm or clinic environments and may require knowledge of animal handling and basic medical procedures.

Where do large animal veterinary assistants make the most money?

Large animal veterinary assistants tend to earn higher wages in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for agricultural or livestock services, such as rural areas with extensive farming operations. States or areas with a strong agricultural industry often offer better compensation due to the specialized nature of the work and the need for experienced assistants. Salary can also vary based on experience, certifications, and the size of the practice or farm.

Progressive Large Animal Opportunity in SW Michigan!

Come join a team that values innovation, collaboration, and a drive to succeed. Customizable practice options based on your passions and skills!

About Us

Stoney Hills Veterinary Service is a highly progressive and expanding large animal practice in southwest Michigan. We highly value a team atmosphere - both within the practice and with the clients we service. We have been providing care to the area for over 25 years. We are a predominantly mobile practice, servicing roughly 30,000 lactating dairy cows in addition to some beef, horses, sheep, goats, and a growing small animal clientele.
You'll be working alongside:

  • Dr. Rachell Bennecke (Michigan State '03); dairy, beef, equine, small ruminant
  • Dr. Jeremy Boge (Michigan State '00); dairy, beef
  • Dr. Michael Walker (Oregon State '11); dairy
  • Dr. Ashley Swan (Michigan State '15); mixed/small animal
  • Dr. Dena Letot (Michigan State '21); mixed/small animal
  • Dr. Keri Suk (Michigan State '21); mixed/small animal
About This Role

This full time, associate veterinarian position could be suited for someone specifically interested in cattle, but we would love to have an applicant who has some equine interest, as that segment of our practice has rapidly expanded in the past 5 years. Along with our 6 veterinarians, our staff includes several support staff. We utilize Easy-Scan lite ultrasounds for our cattle herds. We have digital X-ray system and Terafloat dental equipment for horses.

Our full-time vets typically work 4-day work weeks. We have flexibility if you'd prefer single-species or mixed-large. We have over 65 years of combined experience to mentor young/new grads.

Daily Roles Bovine: client herd health visits, ultrasound palpation, training farm employees and reviewing protocols, routine surgery. Spanish speaking a huge benefit.

Daily Roles Equine/Small Ruminant: preventative care, reproductive work, sick animal calls, field emergencies, equine dentals, etc. If someone had interest in sports medicine/chiropractic/acupuncture, there is definitely a need.

We currently run a 4 week on call rotation where you're on call for a week, average is 1-2 after hours calls/week (ER vet receives 100% ER fee)

About You

Full time large animal teammate (part-time possible) who values innovative processes and collaboration. You thrive with a balance of autonomous work and shared time to strategize and support one another. You are excited about the opportunity to help grow the practice and make your mark, while also being involved in the success of the entire team and client base.
