Description

The Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) at Michigan State University (MSU) offers a 3‑year and 2‑month residency program in veterinary clinical pathology, beginning July 1, 2027. The first two years of training occur at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory’s Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The final year and 2 months are based at Charles River Laboratories (CRL) in Mattawan, Michigan. Training is provided by thirteen veterinary clinical pathologists—six at MSU and seven at CRL—who are diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Residents gain experience in basic pathogenic mechanisms, hematology, cytology, clinical chemistry, endocrinology, urinalysis, immunologic testing, surgical pathology, laboratory animal pathology, good laboratory practices, and drug safety evaluation. Residents also engage in the department’s teaching programs. This residency fulfills eligibility requirements for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) board‑certification exam and provides a unique training experience for those interested in a career in the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • DVM or equivalent degree with an English or English‑translated and notarized veterinary diploma from an AVMA‑accredited or AVMA‑listed international veterinary school (ACVP requirement).
  • Official veterinary college transcripts with cumulative GPA and class standing (if available).
