What is a landscape architect planner?

Landscape Architect Planners are professionals who design, plan, and manage land development projects, focusing on creating sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces. They work on a range of projects including parks, gardens, campuses, recreation facilities, and urban developments. Their role involves site analysis, environmental assessment, design, and collaboration with engineers, architects, and city planners to ensure that landscapes are both beautiful and environmentally responsible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape architect planner?

To thrive as a Landscape Architect Planner, you need expertise in landscape design, environmental planning, and spatial analysis, typically supported by a degree in landscape architecture and relevant licensure. Proficiency in CAD software, GIS systems, and visualization tools is commonly required for effective project planning and presentation. Strong communication, creativity, and project management skills set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing sustainable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces that meet client and regulatory expectations.

What are some common challenges landscape architect planners face when working on large-scale projects?

Landscape Architect Planners often encounter challenges related to balancing client needs, regulatory requirements, and environmental sustainability on large-scale projects. Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams—such as civil engineers, urban planners, and environmental consultants—requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, adapting design concepts to site constraints, public input, and budget limitations can be complex but is a critical part of delivering successful projects. Navigating these challenges offers valuable opportunities for professional growth and skill development.

What is the difference between Landscape Architect Planner vs Landscape Designer?

AspectLandscape Architect PlannerLandscape Designer
CredentialsLicensure (e.g., landscape architecture license), degree in landscape architecture or related fieldTypically no licensure, degree in landscape design or related field often preferred
Work EnvironmentPublic agencies, large firms, urban planning projectsPrivate clients, residential and commercial projects
ResponsibilitiesPlanning, zoning, environmental impact, large-scale projectsDesigning gardens, landscapes, aesthetic features

While both roles involve landscape work, Landscape Architect Planners focus on planning, regulations, and large-scale projects often requiring licensure. Landscape Designers concentrate on aesthetic, smaller-scale landscape creation without the need for licensure. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

Job description

Landscape ArchitectDesign Places That Matter. Shape the Future of Idaho.

At Ackerman-Estvold, we believe great communities begin with thoughtful design. We're looking for an experienced Landscape Architect to join our growing team in Idaho and support our expanding Landscape Architecture practice.

Based in our Garden City office, you'll have the opportunity to lead diverse projects that improve the places where people live, work, and gather. From parks and trails to streetscapes, commercial developments, residential communities, and public infrastructure, your work will shape communities for generations to come.

If you're passionate about creating spaces that are both functional and inspiring, and enjoy collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, we'd love to talk.

What You'll Do

As a Landscape Architect, you'll lead projects from concept through construction while working alongside engineers, architects, planners, surveyors, and clients to create practical, sustainable, and inspiring spaces.

You'll:

  • Support the planning and design of parks, recreation facilities, streetscapes, subdivisions, commercial developments, and public spaces.

  • Prepare site plans, grading concepts, planting plans, construction documents, renderings, and presentation materials.

  • Analyze existing site conditions, including topography, drainage, utilities, environmental constraints, and zoning requirements.

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary design teams to develop creative and technically sound solutions.

  • Support projects through permitting, bidding, and construction administration.

  • Manage multiple projects while maintaining quality, schedules, and budgets.

Support Projects Across Our Communities

As a Landscape Architect, you'll play an important role in supporting landscape architecture services across the communities where Ackerman-Estvold lives and works. You'll partner with engineers, architects, planners, surveyors, and project managers to provide thoughtful design solutions that enhance parks, public spaces, commercial developments, transportation corridors, and residential communities.

Working as part of our multidisciplinary team, you'll provide technical design support throughout each phase of a project-from planning and conceptual design through construction documentation and implementation. Your ability to collaborate across disciplines, balance multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality work will help ensure successful outcomes for our clients and the communities they serve.

What You Bring

We're looking for someone who is collaborative, proactive, and passionate about community-focused design.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

  • Professional license preferred, not required.
  • Four or more years of progressive landscape architecture or land development experience.

  • Strong understanding of site design, grading, construction documentation, and applicable development regulations.

  • Experience with multidisciplinary projects.

  • Excellent communication and project management skills.

  • Ability to manage priorities while maintaining attention to detail.

Technical Experience

Experience with the following is preferred:

  • AutoCAD

  • Civil 3D

  • SketchUp

  • Bluebeam

  • Microsoft Office

Why Ackerman-Estvold?

Our work spans architecture, engineering, surveying, planning, and construction management, giving our teams the opportunity to collaborate on projects that make a meaningful impact throughout the communities we serve.
