Job description

Job Title

Develop, conduct, coordinate and assist in implementing land management activities and projects, monitor ecological and security conditions, and assist with planning and coordinating maintenance for public use infrastructure on County-owned natural lands.

Job Description

Assist Emergency Services with prescribed burns and plans under the direction of the Fire Mitigation Specialist and Officer to include maintenance and upkeep of equipment. Act as land manager on assigned properties. Participate and assist with coordinating activities necessary to properly manage county natural lands including, but not limited to, prescribed burning, invasive species control and removal, maintenance, restoration and public outreach. Develop contract specifications and perform contractor oversight for land management activities.

Assist in developing management plans. Assist ES III's in collection, analysis and evaluation of land management projects/data including GPS/GIS information, effectiveness of land management and monitoring strategies for their restoration and maintenance. Document, monitor and treat exotic plant occurrences on natural area lands to include maintenance and upkeep of equipment. Maintain Florida Natural Areas Pesticide License. Assist in coordinating maintenance on vehicles and other natural area lands equipment.

Assist with coordinating schedules and work assignments for two Environmental Specialist I position. Assist/coordinate with other County departments and divisions on county land management activities, site security and special projects. All other types of work necessary to support land management goals. Provide natural area land access oversight and maintenance of associated infrastructure. Provide site maintenance and upkeep as well as coordinate maintenance of public use infrastructure, including trails, amenities and signage.

Assist with and conduct environmental/educational programs. All other types of work necessary to support public use and access goals. Assist ES III's and supervisors in report and document preparation (Interoffice reports, GIS, and grant agencies).

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological or physical sciences or a related field and two (2) years professional experience. A Master's Degree may substitute for one-year of professional experience. Progressively responsible professional experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college degree. Pass moderate or arduous pack test within one-year of employment and to pass either moderate or arduous test on an annual basis in order to remain in the job classification.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in land management activities such as prescribed burning, exotic control, habitat maintenance and restoration. Herbicide applicator's license; Basic Fire Training S130, S190, L180, ICS 100 and ICS 200, Certified NATA Natural Areas Manager. Job Competencies: Knowledge of FL native ecosystems, especially in Sarasota County. All-terrain vehicle handling, 4 WD vehicle operation; ATV operation; GPS operation; small engine operation and maintenance to include chainsaw, pole saws, pumps/sprayers, mowers and weed eaters.

Must also possess adequate personal communication skills relative to the job and the ability to follow directions well. Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.
