What is land grading?

Land grading is the process of leveling or sloping the ground to prepare a construction site, improve drainage, or prevent erosion. It involves removing or adding soil to create the desired landscape contours. Proper land grading ensures water flows away from structures, helping to avoid flooding and foundation problems. This process is commonly used for building sites, landscaping projects, and agricultural land preparation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Land Grading Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Land Grading Operator, you need expertise in operating heavy equipment, interpreting site plans, and understanding soil composition, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with GPS machine control systems, laser levels, and construction safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving abilities set top performers apart in this field. These skills ensure precise land preparation, project efficiency, and safety on construction sites.

Job description

Title: Civil Engineer (Land Development / Site Design) – Hybrid / Relocation Offered

About Us
Land & Resource Consulting is a leading-edge civil engineering and landscape architecture firm serving the greater Minneapolis–St. Paul area. We specialize in private development projects — residential, commercial, and industrial — and are known for our creative site solutions, strong client relationships, and a flexible hybrid work environment.

The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Civil Engineer with 2+ years of experience who is passionate about site design, grading, and stormwater management. You’ll be an integral part of our collaborative team — working from concept through construction on a variety of exciting development projects.

If you’re ready to grow your civil engineering career and relocate to a dynamic, design-driven firm — we’ll help make that move possible.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and prepare site grading, utility, and stormwater management plans for commercial, residential, and industrial projects.
  • Create conceptual land-use layouts and coordinate plan sets using Autodesk Civil 3D.
  • Collaborate with geotechnical, environmental, and landscape architecture consultants.
  • Conduct modeling and review coordination with municipal and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in all project phases — from feasibility and concept to construction documentation and field support.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (required).
  • 2–5 years of civil site design or land development experience.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D (required).
  • Strong understanding of grading, drainage, and utility design principles.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Why Join Us

  • Competitive salary with relocation assistance available for qualified candidates.
  • Hybrid work flexibility – collaborate in-office and remotely.
  • Opportunity to work on diverse and challenging land development projects.
  • Supportive environment for career growth and professional development.

Company Description
