Labview Software Engineer information

What is a LabVIEW software engineer?

A LabVIEW Software Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining software applications using National Instruments' LabVIEW programming environment. They typically work on automation, data acquisition, and control systems in industries like aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and manufacturing. Their tasks may include designing user interfaces, integrating hardware components, and optimizing system performance. Strong knowledge of LabVIEW, NI hardware, and engineering principles is essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW software engineer?

A Labview Software Engineer needs strong proficiency in LabVIEW programming, experience with test automation, and a background in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with National Instruments hardware, DAQ systems, and certification such as NI Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are often required. Standout candidates excel in problem-solving, have solid analytical skills, and communicate effectively within cross-functional engineering teams. These skills and qualifications are critical for developing robust test solutions and ensuring efficient system integration in technical environments.

What kind of projects or products do LabVIEW software engineers typically work on?

Labview Software Engineers often work on designing and implementing automated test systems, data acquisition solutions, and measurement tools for industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and manufacturing. Typical projects may include developing control systems for production lines, creating automated validation environments for hardware components, or supporting research and development teams with custom-built test rigs. The work involves close collaboration with hardware engineers, project managers, and quality teams to deliver reliable, scalable solutions tailored to specific product requirements. This hands-on, project-driven environment offers continuous learning opportunities and exposure to diverse technical challenges.

Do companies still use LabVIEW?

LabVIEW remains widely used in industries such as automation, testing, and data acquisition, especially for developing control systems and measurement solutions. Many organizations value its graphical programming environment and integration with hardware, making it a relevant skill for LabVIEW software engineers. While some companies are transitioning to other platforms, LabVIEW continues to be a key tool in many engineering and research environments.

Is LabVIEW in demand?

LabVIEW Software Engineers are in demand in industries such as automation, testing, and data acquisition, especially in sectors like manufacturing, aerospace, and research. Proficiency with hardware integration, control systems, and certifications can enhance job prospects, as many roles require experience with National Instruments tools and real-time systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare design data for electrical/electromechanical aircraft parts using reverse engineering practices and coordinate with certification and material engineers.

  • Investigate in-service equipment failures to determine root cause, develop repairs, and design automated test equipment (ATE) and data acquisition systems.

  • Create technical documents, develop automated test scripts, and analyze test data to support repair development, part qualification, and certification processes.

Job description

Description

The individual will prepare design data for electrical/electromechanical aircraft parts using reverse engineering practices and coordinate with certification and material engineers along with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives. They ensure that design features are consistent with functional performance and safety requirements for the aircraft system installation and with standard manufacturing practices. Additionally, the engineer investigates in-service equipment failures to determine root cause, develops repairs to return parts to service, and designs automated test equipment (ATE) and data acquisition systems to support repair development and part qualification. This requires close communication with the engineering and sales teams to evaluate new project feasibility.

Requirements

  • Draft sketches and models of parts
  • Conduct dimensional and electrical inspection of sample parts
  • Prepare detailed dimensional and electrical analysis reports
  • Research part function, failure modes, and operating conditions
  • Determine appropriate material and performance specifications based on material analyses and testing
  • Develop tolerance limits based on dimensional data, manufacturing capabilities, and part function
  • Prepare production drawings using industry standards
  • Troubleshoot failed in-service equipment to develop repair procedures for return to service
  • Design, build, and validate automated test equipment (ATE) for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic aircraft components
  • Develop automated test scripts and data acquisition routines to support functional testing, failure analysis, and repair validation
  • Analyze and interpret test data collected via DAQ systems to support engineering decisions and certification packages
  • Provide engineering support for procurement, manufacturing, receiving, and certification of parts
  • Create technical documents using FAA guidelines and regulations
  • Work with Designated Engineering Representatives to deliver complete certification packages to the FAA

Experience and Skills

  • 5+ years of full-time relevant work experience (design, manufacturing, quality)
  • CAD/3D modeling design experience
  • Familiarity with aerospace specifications and processes
  • Experience and/or familiarity with circuit board design and/or reverse engineering a plus
  • Experience developing, planning, and implementing automated test equipment (ATE) and test procedures for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic aircraft systems
  • Proficient in scripting or programming for test automation (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, VBA) a plus
  • Experience with analog and digital interfaces, electronic analysis techniques, and laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other related test equipment
  • Hands-on experience with data acquisition (DAQ) hardware and software such as NI/LabVIEW, MCC DAQ/DASYLab, and MATLAB
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of drafting standards
  • Proficient with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MS Office applications, Adobe Acrobat
  • Skilled in writing technical documents
  • Experience in reverse engineering is desired
  • Shop time or other hands-on experience is preferred
  • Experience with avionics, communications, lighting, and/or electrical aircraft systems is preferred
  • Understanding and familiarity with FAA standards is preferred
  • Detail oriented and highly organized

Education

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline

Compensation

  • Salary position commensurate with experience, bonus based on company and individual performance
  • We offer medical, dental, vision, life and other insurance options; 401k with 100% match on first 4%; full time workers get paid holidays, vacation & sick/personal leave accrued on hire date.
