Labview Development information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW developer?

To thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, you need strong expertise in graphical programming, experience with test automation, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, DAQ hardware, and certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure efficient system development, reliable test automation, and smooth team collaboration in high-tech environments.

What is the difference between Labview Development vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectLabview DevelopmentTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with LabVIEW certification often preferred.Requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in testing tools are common.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily lab and development settings, working on hardware integration and data acquisition.Mostly office and lab environments, focusing on designing and executing automated tests.
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, and research for data acquisition and control systems.Common in electronics, automotive, and software industries for quality assurance and testing.

While both roles involve testing and data analysis, Labview Development focuses on creating software for hardware control and data acquisition, whereas Test Automation Engineers design and implement automated testing processes to ensure product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by LabVIEW developers and how can they be addressed?

LabVIEW Developers often face challenges such as integrating LabVIEW with legacy hardware, managing large and complex codebases, and ensuring efficient collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, developers should maintain clear documentation, utilize LabVIEW's modular programming features, and follow best practices for version control. Regular code reviews and open communication with hardware engineers and project managers also help streamline development and troubleshoot issues quickly.

What is LabVIEW development?

LabVIEW development refers to the process of designing, creating, and maintaining applications using LabVIEW, which is a graphical programming environment developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation. Developers use LabVIEW's visual interface to create programs, or 'virtual instruments,' by connecting functional blocks instead of writing traditional code. This approach is especially popular in engineering, scientific research, and manufacturing settings where rapid prototyping and hardware integration are essential.

Job description

The Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies Division is seeking aPostdoctoral Appointeeto conduct research inchemical process engineering, separations, and process intensificationfor recovery of critical materials from primary and secondary feedstocks. Responsibilities may include designing, constructing, and operating new experimental systems; supporting bench- and pilot-scale testing of hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching, solvent (liquid-liquid) extraction, and adsorption; evaluating process performance and operability; developing test plans and standard operating procedures; assisting with data analysis and technical documentation; and contributing to publications, reports, and sponsor deliverables.

The successful candidate will work closely with staff researchers and technical teams and will be expected to contribute to a safe, collaborative, and results-oriented research environment. The work will emphasizeprocess engineering, experimental systems, anddata-driven evaluation of process performance, with opportunities to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and external partners across national laboratory, university, and industrial settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, assemble, operate, and troubleshoot bench- and pilot-scale chemical process equipment

  • Plan and execute experiments related to separation processes, fluid handling, and process intensification

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data to assess process performance, stability, and scale-up considerations

  • Support development of process documentation, including test plans, operating procedures, and technical reports

  • Contribute to integration of instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition systems for experimental platforms

  • Work with aqueous and organic chemical systems and support characterization of process streams

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including chemists, engineers, data scientists, and external project partners

  • Present results in internal reviews, sponsor meetings, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications

  • Maintain a strong commitment to safe work practices and compliance with laboratory requirements

  • Contributes to the development of white papers and proposals seeking support from existing and new research sponsors

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. inChemical Engineering,Mechanical Engineering,Mining Engineering, or a closely related discipline completed in the past 5 years or soon-to-be completed

  • Knowledge and experience in experimental research involving chemical or process systems

  • Familiarity withprocess instrumentation, sensors, controls, ordata acquisition systems
