Senior Embedded Systems & Digital Controls Engineer
Position Summary
Busek is seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Systems & Digital Controls Engineer to lead the design and development of embedded electronic control systems for advanced spacecraft propulsion technologies. This role is responsible for the architecture, design, implementation, integration, and testing of digital control electronics, embedded firmware, and operator interfaces that support both development and flight hardware.
The ideal candidate has experience designing embedded hardware using microcontrollers and FPGAs, developing embedded firmware, and creating reliable hardware and software interfaces for complex electromechanical systems. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, this individual will help bring new propulsion technologies from concept through flight qualification while strengthening Busek's in-house digital controls capabilities.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Design embedded electronic systems including schematics, PCB layout, and digital control architectures.
  • Develop embedded firmware for microcontroller and FPGA-based systems supporting propulsion power processing units (PPUs) and spacecraft interfaces.
  • Design and implement communication interfaces between propulsion electronics and spacecraft systems.
  • Develop operator control software and graphical user interfaces using Python, LabVIEW, or similar technologies.
  • Design and implement state machine-based embedded control systems for flight operations, sequencing, and autonomous control.
  • Perform hardware bring-up, debugging, integration, verification, and validation testing.
  • Participate in system architecture reviews, design reviews, and technical risk assessments.
  • Prepare engineering documentation including design specifications, interface control documents, test procedures, and verification reports.
  • Collaborate with Systems, Mechanical, Software, Manufacturing, and Test Engineering throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support environmental testing, qualification activities, and flight hardware certification.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continued growth of Busek's embedded systems and digital controls expertise.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong background in embedded systems and digital electronics.
  • Experience designing embedded hardware using microcontrollers.
  • Experience developing embedded firmware in C/C++.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB design.
  • Familiarity with FPGA development and integration.
  • Experience with digital communication protocols such as SPI, I C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, and RS-422/485.
  • Experience developing graphical user interfaces using Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of state machine design for embedded control systems.
  • Experience with hardware integration, debugging, and laboratory test equipment.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Vorago ARM Cortex-M4 microcontrollers.
  • Experience developing electronics for aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability applications.
  • Experience with spacecraft electrical interfaces and avionics.
  • Experience supporting power electronics or power processing unit controls.
  • Familiarity with radiation-tolerant or radiation-hardened electronics.
  • Experience with requirements-driven development, configuration management, and design verification.
  • Experience supporting products from concept through qualification and production.
