Job description

Position Summary 

The Shop Laborer supports the Mountain Operations Department by assisting with the upkeep, organization, and operation of the maintenance shop, equipment, vehicles, and area facilities. This role plays an important part in ensuring maintenance staff have the tools, materials, and support needed to keep Hilltop Ski Area operating safely and efficiently throughout the year.  The Shop Laborer is dependable, safety-minded, and willing to perform a variety of hands-on tasks in a fast-paced environment. Shop Laborers work both independently and as part of a team while assisting with maintenance projects, equipment preparation, facility upkeep, and general shop operations. Adaptability, initiative, and a strong work ethic are essential for success in this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Shop Operations & Support

  • Assist mechanics and maintenance staff with routine maintenance and repair projects.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Organize and store tools, parts, supplies, and equipment in designated locations.
  • Assist with inventory management and notify supervisors when supplies or parts need replenishment.
  • Retrieve and transport tools, materials, and equipment as needed.
  • Help prepare equipment and work areas for maintenance activities.

Equipment & Facility Maintenance

  • Wash, clean, and prepare vehicles, snowcats, snowmachines, ATVs, and other equipment.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance activities including inspections, lubrication, cleaning, and basic servicing.
  • Perform routine facility maintenance and support projects as assigned.
  • Assist with seasonal setup, teardown, and operational preparations.
  • Report damaged equipment, maintenance concerns, or unsafe conditions to management.

Grounds & General Labor

  • Assist with snow removal, grounds maintenance, and general property upkeep.
  • Operate hand tools and basic power tools safely and effectively.
  • Load, unload, move, and store materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform general labor tasks in support of maintenance and operational needs.
  • Assist with special projects and event setup as assigned.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all Hilltop safety policies, procedures, and incident reporting requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately when performing assigned duties.
  • Maintain awareness of workplace hazards and actively contribute to a safe work environment.
  • Report accidents, injuries, equipment failures, and safety concerns promptly.
  • Operate equipment and tools safely and according to established procedures.

Team Support & Guest Interaction

  • Communicate effectively with maintenance staff and supervisors regarding assigned tasks and priorities.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure maintenance projects are completed efficiently.
  • Support other departments when operational needs require assistance.
  • Interact with guests in a friendly, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Promote a culture of teamwork, safety, professionalism, and fun.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; related maintenance, construction, warehouse, or general labor experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must pass a background check
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance-related equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize assigned tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and guests.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and safe equipment operation.
  • Dependable attendance and willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and other shifts as operational needs require.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn maintenance-related skills preferred.
