Job Title

Clinical Laboratory Scientist

Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures. This position performs requested clinical procedures on body fluids and clinical procedures related to patient care; performs quality control maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments, performs clerical work in the absence of a technical assistant and assist the manager in any capacity requested. This position performs tracking for specimens coming to the department and helps with the send outs to reference laboratories and receive and approve same results.

Responsibilities

• Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.

• Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.

• Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.

• Maintains work area—cleans bench, restocks supplies, notifies supervisor of low stock.

• Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.

• Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor or senior tech if unable to solve the problem.

• Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.

• Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.

• Responsible for working in all departments of the laboratory when working the night shift.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

• Associates Degree Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology Required or

• Bachelor's Degree Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology Required

Licenses and Certifications

• Clinical Lab Technologist Licensed State of Florida Upon Hire Required

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
