Laboratory Internships information

What is a laboratory internship?

Laboratory internships are short-term work experiences that allow students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in a laboratory setting. These internships typically involve assisting with experiments, conducting research, maintaining lab equipment, and learning proper laboratory protocols. They provide valuable hands-on training, exposure to scientific methods, and opportunities to work alongside experienced professionals. Laboratory internships are often offered by universities, research institutions, and companies in fields such as biology, chemistry, and medical research. Completing a laboratory internship can help build important skills and enhance a resume for future academic or career opportunities.

What types of hands-on projects can I expect to work on during a laboratory internship?

As a laboratory intern, you will typically be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with sample preparation, conducting experiments under supervision, collecting and analyzing data, and helping maintain laboratory equipment. You may also work on specific research assignments or support ongoing studies depending on the lab’s focus. These experiences are designed to build your practical skills, introduce you to standard laboratory protocols, and provide insight into the collaborative nature of scientific research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in laboratory internships, and why are they important?

To thrive in Laboratory Internships, you need a solid understanding of basic scientific principles, laboratory techniques, and relevant coursework in biology, chemistry, or related fields. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety protocols, and data analysis software such as Microsoft Excel or specialized lab management systems is often expected. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work as part of a team are invaluable soft skills in this environment. These competencies ensure accurate experimental results, maintain a safe lab environment, and foster effective collaboration for meaningful scientific outcomes.

What is the difference between Laboratory Internships vs Laboratory Technicians?

AspectLaboratory InternshipsLaboratory Technicians
Required CredentialsTypically students or recent graduates, sometimes with coursework in sciencePost-secondary education or certifications in laboratory technology
Work EnvironmentEducational labs, research facilities, or internship sitesClinical, industrial, or research laboratories
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, research organizations, biotech companiesHospitals, diagnostic labs, manufacturing plants
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding entry-level opportunities, gaining experienceJob responsibilities, required skills, career progression

Laboratory internships are primarily educational opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience, often unpaid or part-time. Laboratory technicians are trained professionals responsible for conducting tests, maintaining equipment, and supporting laboratory operations. While internships focus on learning, technicians perform ongoing technical tasks in professional settings.

Job description

Job Description Step into a hands-on laboratory role where your wet chemistry expertise and oil sample testing skills directly support critical R&D and quality initiatives. This is a contract opportunity paying $33 per hour, offering consistent weekday hours and exposure to advanced analytical techniques in a professional lab environment. About the Role: As a Lab Analyst, you will perform routine and complex chemical analyses on oil and related samples to support product development, process optimization, and quality control.

You will be responsible for accurate sample preparation, execution of wet chemistry methods, and operation of key analytical instruments. Your work will ensure reliable data generation, enabling informed technical decisions across the organisation. Key Responsibilities: Perform wet chemistry testing on oil and related samples following established methods and SOPs.

Prepare samples, reagents, and standards for analysis, ensuring proper handling, labelling, and storage. Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation, including Gas Chromatography (GC), CHNS elemental analysers, and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Record, analyse, and interpret test results, ensuring data integrity and traceability in electronic and paper-based systems.

Troubleshoot basic instrument and method issues, escalating complex problems as needed. Compile and format test reports using Microsoft Office applications for review by scientists, engineers, and management. Adhere to all laboratory safety procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Support general laboratory housekeeping, inventory management, and calibration activities to maintain a compliant and efficient lab environment. Key Requirements: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. Proven laboratory experience in a professional or academic setting involving wet chemistry techniques.

Hands-on experience handling and testing oil samples in a lab environment. Demonstrated experience operating Gas Chromatography (GC) systems. Experience performing CHNS elemental analysis and interpreting results.

Experience using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) for materials or oil-related analyses. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for data analysis and reporting. Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to follow written procedures accurately.

Effective verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with technical teams. Desirable Skills: Experience working in an industrial, petrochemical, or oil and gas laboratory environment. Familiarity with LIMS or other electronic data management systems.

Knowledge of quality management systems (e.g., ISO standards, GLP) in a laboratory setting. Experience with method development, optimisation, or validation for analytical techniques. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or closely related scientific field (required)

Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (preferred). Relevant laboratory internships, co-op placements, or prior industry lab roles (preferred). If you are a motivated laboratory professional seeking to apply your analytical skills in a contract role with clear impact, submit your application to be considered for this opportunity.
