Job Overview
A leading healthcare organization is seeking a detail-oriented Clinical Laboratory Scientist with Anatomic Pathology and Histology experience to support its hospital laboratory.
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist will perform histological procedures, maintain the accuracy and integrity of laboratory results, and ensure compliance with established quality, safety, and regulatory standards. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent troubleshooting abilities, and an active qualifying New York State laboratory license.
The selected candidate will support routine histology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, quality-control activities, equipment maintenance, proficiency testing, and regulatory readiness.
Responsibilities

  • Perform histological procedures, including routine processing, special stains, and immunohistochemistry
  • Follow established pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic laboratory procedures
  • Ensure the accuracy, quality, and timely reporting of laboratory results
  • Evaluate test results for abnormalities and confirm findings according to department protocols
  • Maintain complete records of patient testing, quality control, calibrations, and equipment verification
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Identify and document issues that may negatively affect testing performance
  • Notify laboratory leadership when test systems fall outside established performance specifications
  • Perform and document corrective actions before releasing affected patient results
  • Process proficiency-testing samples in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Participate in laboratory quality-assurance and performance-improvement programs
  • Document and report nonconformances according to established procedures
  • Notify clinicians and patient-care units of critical results
  • Support established STAT testing turnaround-time requirements
  • Participate in test validations, employee training, and competency assessments
  • Maintain inventory records, including lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and quality-control requirements
  • Assist with inspection preparation and regulatory-readiness activities
  • Support compliance with CAP, NYSDOH, Joint Commission, and other applicable standards
  • Complete required annual training, in-service education, and continuing-education activities
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all laboratory safety policies
  • Perform additional laboratory duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Histotechnology, Biology, or a related scientific field
  • Previous Anatomic Pathology or Histology experience
  • Current New York State Histotechnologist license for work within the Anatomic Pathology section, or another qualifying New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license
  • Experience performing routine histology procedures
  • Knowledge of special stains and immunohistochemistry
  • Understanding of laboratory quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, adaptability, and stress tolerance
  • Ability to work varied day shifts based on department needs
  • Ability to complete and maintain required section-specific training and competency assessments
Preferred
  • ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Histotechnologist
  • Previous hospital laboratory experience
  • Experience with laboratory information systems
  • Experience preparing for CAP or New York State laboratory inspections
  • Experience with instrument validation, maintenance, and corrective-action documentation
