Job description

We are hiring 3 FTE Medical Technologist (Generalist) to performs a full range of complex clinical laboratory testing to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This position rotates through multiple laboratory disciplines and is responsible for specimen processing, testing, quality assurance, equipment maintenance, result reporting, and regulatory compliance. The Medical Technologist works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory services.

This position requires rotating assignments across laboratory departments and may include evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on-call shifts based on operational needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Clinical Laboratory Testing

  • Perform routine, advanced, and specialized laboratory testing using manual and automated methodologies.
  • Evaluate, perform, monitor, and validate laboratory procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Recognize abnormal or unexpected results and investigate discrepancies using scientific principles.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot testing issues to ensure accurate patient results.
  • Evaluate test validity by correlating laboratory findings with patient history, medications, and clinical information.
  • Perform confirmatory or follow-up testing when indicated.

Specimen Collection and Processing

  • Evaluate specimen suitability and resolve collection or processing issues.
  • Ensure specimens are collected, labeled, transported, stored, and processed according to laboratory standards.
  • Verify appropriate collection containers, preservatives, anticoagulants, timing, temperature, and patient preparation requirements.
  • Maintain specimen integrity throughout the testing process.

Reference Laboratory Coordination

  • Process, package, and ship specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with federal, state, local, and laboratory regulations.
  • Accurately enter laboratory orders into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Complete required reference laboratory documentation and shipping records.
  • Meet specimen shipment deadlines while ensuring specimen viability.
  • Communicate critical laboratory results to ordering providers according to established policies.

Laboratory Information System (LIS)

  • Enter, review, edit, verify, and release laboratory results in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Identify and immediately communicate critical values to physicians and document all required notifications.
  • Maintain accurate electronic laboratory records and documentation.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and document equipment performance.
  • Identify instrument malfunctions and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor equipment functionality to ensure accurate and reliable testing.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

  • Perform quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing activities.
  • Document corrective actions and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in method validation, instrument verification, and implementation of new laboratory procedures.
  • Establish reference intervals and perform statistical analyses when implementing new methodologies.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable accreditation, regulatory, biosafety, and biosecurity standards.


Problem Solving

  • Investigate testing discrepancies and laboratory issues.
  • Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives.

Customer Service and Communication

  • Serve as a laboratory resource for physicians, nurses, and healthcare staff.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding laboratory methodologies, test performance, result interpretation, and testing limitations.
  • Provide clear, professional communication while delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Community-Based Laboratory Support

  • Process and manage laboratory specimens received from Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
  • Review documentation, process specimens, enter results, and maintain shipping manifests according to established procedures.

Organization and Workflow

  • Prioritize workload to meet turnaround times and departmental objectives.
  • Maintain an organized work environment while ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related laboratory science from an accredited institution.


Certification

Must have one of the following certifications is preferred or required based on employer requirements:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – ASCP
  • Medical Technologist (MT) – ASCP
  • Equivalent nationally recognized certification

Experience

  • Experience performing laboratory testing in a clinical, hospital, or diagnostic laboratory setting preferred.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred.
  • Experience with automated laboratory instrumentation preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical laboratory science principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis, blood bank, and specimen processing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, quality control, and laboratory regulations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and laboratory procedures.
