What is a laboratory genetic counselor?

A Laboratory Genetic Counselor (LGC) is a specialized genetic counselor who works in a clinical or research laboratory setting, helping to interpret and communicate genetic test results. They collaborate with laboratory scientists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate test selection, result interpretation, and patient management. LGCs may also contribute to test development, quality assurance, and access to genetic services. Their role bridges the gap between complex genetic testing and practical patient care by providing expert insights on genetic data.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a laboratory genetic counselor?

Laboratory Genetic Counselors are responsible for interpreting genetic test results, preparing and reviewing laboratory reports, and collaborating closely with laboratory scientists, physicians, and sometimes directly with patients. They often evaluate family and medical histories, classify genetic variants, and provide guidance on genetic testing options and implications. Additionally, they may assist in developing and refining laboratory protocols, participate in case discussions, and help educate healthcare providers about test utilization and result interpretation. This role offers a mix of technical analysis, multidisciplinary collaboration, and ongoing education in a rapidly evolving field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laboratory genetic counselor?

To thrive as a Laboratory Genetic Counselor, you need an advanced understanding of human genetics, molecular biology, and genetic testing, typically supported by a master's degree in genetic counseling and board certification (ABGC or ABMGG). Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), genetic variant databases, and bioinformatics tools is also essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective written and verbal communication distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for accurately interpreting complex genetic data, ensuring clear communication with clinicians and clients, and facilitating impactful clinical decisions.
