Day Kimball Health is hiring a Laboratory Service Specialist to join our Laboratory team in Putnam, CT!

This is a per diem opportunity with a minimum commitment of 32 hours per month. Candidates must have first-shift availability to support departmental staffing needs.

Laboratory Service Specialist Summary:
Under the direction of the Front Office Manager, the Lab Service Representative is responsible for obtaining and verifying patient demographic information, insurance, and other information for various hospital records. Greets patients, relatives, or patient representatives to gather and record demographic information for various laboratory records and provision of care. Functions as communication center of Laboratory Services by routing people and telephone calls appropriately. Interprets and replicates written physician requests into the lab system quickly and accurately with minimum of supervision.
Laboratory Service Specialist Job Responsibilities:
  • Greets and interviews patients to obtain required information to complete the registration check before placing orders in the Laboratory Information System. Knows over 1,300 alpha codes in the LIS for order entry of the physician’s order.
  • Knows where to locate standing orders, faxed orders, previously ordered (i.e., Oncology) and pre-employment orders from Employee Health.
  • Answers all incoming calls and transfers to appropriate person/Lab department in a timely courteous manner.
  • Is aware of locations of off-site service centers and courier runs so that patients can access Lab services efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Distributes Lab reports appropriately.
  • Maintains Order Facilitator through indexing electronic requisitions and archiving/scanning billed orders
  • Resolves problems and discrepancies from previous days work.
  • Follow up on incomplete registrations by contacting Physician office or patient at home to get complete information, including diagnosis for ABNs
Laboratory Service Specialist Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of current liability insurance as well as reliable vehicle required
  • High school graduate or equivalent, Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred.
  • Experience with computer entry, customer service and medical office preferred.
  • Knowledge of Healthcare insurance preferred
  • Computer literacy required
Laboratory Service Specialist Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to Valid driver’s license and proof of current liability insurance as well as reliable vehicle required.
  • Ability to concentrate on detailed and repetitive record keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively with other members of the team.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental policies, especially Standard Precautions.
  • Ability to review orders and verify correctly:
    • Requisition date
    • Patient’s name is clearly written
    • Date of birth
    • MD identification in ordering/copy to fields
    • MD Signature and Diagnosis Code
  • Ability to receive specimens and explain specimen collection containers/directions to patients.
  • Calls physician office if question on test requisition.
  • Ensures registration data in Sunquest transmitted through interface is correct for patient.
  • Ability to perform order entry on a patient with multiple physicians/same tests; forward any required crediting to appropriate person.
  • Performs and maintains Call Backs or faxes on Laboratory tests as they are required and resulted.
