Job description

Position Purpose

Performs manual and semi-skilled work in support of street maintenance, right-of-way upkeep, stormwater system maintenance, and general public works operations.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Performs routine maintenance of city streets, rights-of-way, and public properties.
  • Mows, trims, and maintains vegetation along streets, easements, and city-owned properties.
  • Assists with pothole repair, asphalt patching, and minor roadway maintenance.
  • Maintains stormwater infrastructure, including clearing drains, ditches, culverts, and catch basins.
  • Collects leaves, brush, litter, and other debris from streets and public areas.
  • Assists the Sanitation Department with refuse collection routes during peak periods, including holidays, community clean-up events, and staffing shortages.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains street signs, markers, and related infrastructure.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, and light to medium-duty equipment and vehicles, including mowers, trimmers, chippers, and similar equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection, cleaning, and minor maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Assists in construction, repair, and maintenance projects.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control devices, including cones, barricades, and signage.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports materials, tools, equipment, debris, and personnel using City vehicles, including pickup trucks and similar light-duty vehicles.
  • Performs routine vehicle inspections and reports maintenance or safety issues.
  • Responds to weather events and emergency situations, including debris removal and storm response.
  • Follows all applicable safety policies, procedures, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Uses required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Reports hazards, accidents, equipment issues, and unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support departmental operations.

Qualifications

Training and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate.
  • Experience in public works, construction, landscaping, or a related field preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully complete background and drug screenings.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of public works maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic laws, work zone safety, and safe equipment operation.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform routine manual labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions. Employees are regularly exposed to weather extremes, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and direct sunlight. Work may occur on uneven terrain, roadways, and active construction or maintenance sites. Employees are frequently exposed to dust, dirt, noise, vibrations, and moving equipment or traffic hazards. Work may involve proximity to heavy machinery, hand and power tools, and potentially hazardous materials associated with street maintenance and repair.
