Job description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Supports the mission, core values, and customer service of Dialysis Care Center, LLC (DCC).
Adheres to the DCC Policies and Procedures and Compliance Program, including all state and federal regulatory requirements.
The In Center Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician -Student Intern provides safe, compassionate, and high-quality direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse while supporting DCC's mission of clinical excellence, patient safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
PRIMARY DUTIES / ACTIVITIES:
Activities STUDENTS CAN Perform with Direct Supervision
The following activities require direct supervision by the CCHT trainer under the supervision of the Licensed Nurse. Direct supervision means physical presence with a visual oversight of the Student while conducting the activity. The CCHT trainer supervising the Student is responsible for the documentation of each task.
• Weigh patients
• Set-up machines
• Take patient temperature and blood pressure and gather other general patient data (e.g. overall well-being)
• All data collection is validated and documented by Clinic Manager or Charge Nurse
• Verify and inspect dialyzers prior to machine set up
• Bleach and heat machines
• Clean Phoenix meter or MyronL meter
• Hold sites after needles removed
• Tape sites after no evidence of bleeding
• Take inventory of supplies
• Stock supplies
• Tear-down machines
• Clean machines with bleach solution between patients/shifts
• Clean patient stations (I.e. chair, machine, BP cuffs, TV, dialysate jugs, chair-side table, etc.) after patient treatment
• Dispose and replace any sharps container that is 2/3rds full
• Make dialysis "on/off" packs for the next treatment day
• Make bleach (1:100 & 1:10) per P&P
• Escort patients to and from their treatment chair
• Reinforce the patient education, games or activities that is provided by the nursing team
• Transfer patients
• Perform other clerical (non-clinical) tasks, supervised
Documentation
• The Student can document Pre- or Post-Data Collection
Note that some state Patient Care Technician (PCT) laws and regulations may limit a Student's ability to perform activities. For any questions regarding state specific regulations, please discuss with the Clinic Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse.
Activities STUDENTS CANNOT Perform
Below is a list of activities the Students cannot perform under any circumstances.

o Document any drug wastage
o Catheter Care
o Access Care
o Infections
o Adverse Occurrence Report (AOR)
• Medications
o Prepare any medications (e.g. draw up heparin or lidocaine)
o Administer heparin
o Administer any intravenous, subcutaneous, intra-dermal, oral, or topical medications
o Give saline
o Give oxygen
• Vascular Access
o Perform cannulation
o Perform lab draws
o Perform glucose testing
• Dialysis Treatment
o Perform equipment safety checks
o Initiate treatments
o Terminate treatments
o Respond to/ re-set alarms
• General Activities
o Perform water checks / chlorine checks
o Take verbal or telephonic physician orders
o Calibrate Phoenix meter
o Perform general equipment safety checks
o Mix bicarbonate
o Mix centralized acid
• Perform any other clinical tasks not listed under "Activities the Student can perform under direct supervision." Reinforces education with patients and family members on all aspects of End Stage Renal Disease.
• Assists in the management of inventory supplies.
• Staff scheduled hours are based on the needs of the facility and are subject to change.
• Other duties, as assigned.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
• Responsible for supporting the values and customer service standards of DCC.
• Accountable for outstanding customer service to all staff, clients and vendors
• Develops and maintains effective relationships through effective and timely communication.
• Initiates action to respond, resolve and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner.
• Support DCC initiatives.
EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must possess a minimum of High School diploma or GED
• Eligible for CCHT, Bonent, or State-required certificate
• Current CPR card if required by School
EXPERIENCE:
• Must be PC proficient and able to thrive in a fast-paced setting; experience in Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word and Excel a must
• Good presentation & communication skills
• Must be productive & resourceful with the ability to meet deadlines
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines effectively
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Strong data entry, organizational and interpersonal skills
• High integrity, team player with patient service focus and flexibility

• Day-to-day work includes desk and personal computer work and interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians. Working hours can vary, including the days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel to scheduled staff meetings may be required. The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community. Travel to regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meetings may be required.
• The work environment is characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials
The position provides direct patient care that regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients and assisting with ambulation. Equipment aids and/or coworkers may assist. This position requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and the employee must be able to bend over. The employee may occasionally be required to push and/or pull equipment, exerting up to 15 pounds of force. The employee may be required to frequently lift and lower solutions of up to 30 lbs. and occasionally lift solutions of up to 50 lbs., as high as 5 feet.
