What does a lab technician intern do?

A Lab Technician Intern assists scientists and senior lab technicians in conducting experiments, preparing samples, and maintaining laboratory equipment. They are often responsible for collecting data, performing basic analyses, and ensuring that lab protocols and safety procedures are followed. This role provides hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, allowing interns to learn about scientific methods, equipment calibration, and data recording. The internship is designed to give students or recent graduates practical skills that can help them in their future careers in science or healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lab technician intern?

To thrive as a Lab Technician Intern, you need a basic understanding of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and scientific principles, typically gained through coursework in biology, chemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data entry systems, and common software like Microsoft Excel is often required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These skills ensure accurate results, safe lab practices, and smooth collaboration within research teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by lab technician interns during their internship?

Lab Technician Interns often encounter challenges such as adapting to strict safety protocols, accurately documenting experimental results, and learning to operate specialized laboratory equipment. Balancing multiple tasks and prioritizing urgent assignments can also be demanding, especially in fast-paced research environments. However, these challenges provide valuable learning opportunities and help interns develop critical skills that are highly valued in laboratory settings.

    What you'll do

  • Design and prototype data collection hardware: camera rigs, sensor mounts, teleoperation interfaces, end-effector and wrist-cam assemblies.

  • Build recording and data-handling scripts (multi-camera capture, synchronization, sensor fusion) targeting HDF5 and LeRobot dataset formats.

  • Integrate and evaluate off-the-shelf components: RGB-D cameras arrays, dexterous hands, teleoperation gloves, VR headsets.

  • Support real-world data collection and model evaluation sessions on robot arms and humanoid platforms.

  • 3D-print, assemble, wire, and bench-test prototypes alongside our lab technician.

  • Document hardware specs, BOMs, and reproducible setup procedures.

  • Required qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or completed a Master's (or PhD) in Robotics, ECE, ME, CS, or a related field.

  • Proficient in Python; comfortable with Linux and version control.

  • Able to work on-site in Palo Alto or Redmond Lab

  • Preferred

  • Experience with imitation learning / robot learning data pipelines (LeRobot, RLDS, HDF5).

  • Familiarity with depth cameras, SLAM, or multi-camera calibration.
