Medical Lab Tech - Children's Oncology, Part-Time

Job Summary: A licensed Medical Laboratory Technician performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures, using both manual and automated methods. This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State of Tennessee/Georgia guidelines. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to coordinate care for patients and is trained and assigned to support patients/families/caregivers in self-management, self-efficacy and behavior change. Is trained and assigned (as per their role and responsibilities) to manage the practices' patient population. Participates in the practice's quality improvement process and performance evaluation.

Education: Required: High school or equivalent plus 12 months approved clinical training or an associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. In lieu of Associates degree has successfully completed equivalent military training and served as a medical laboratory specialist. Preferred: Laboratory experience preferred. Experience with pediatric hematology laboratory studies Experience with pediatric phlebotomy

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration Required: Licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the State of Tennessee Laboratory Licensing Board.

Department Position Summary: The Medical Laboratory Technician performs hematologic, chemical, microscopic and bacteriological testing of body fluids to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of a Medical Director. He/she works closely with the Medical Director and team members in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement. He/she performs other duties as assigned by a Medical Director and/or Laboratory Director. Specific duties for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Medical Laboratory Technician include: Rapid, high quality turnaround of complete blood counts and manual differentials. Phlebotomy services for patients from birth to young adulthood. Processing and preparation of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy samples. Coordination of specialty sendout laboratory testing for the division. Daily maintenance and QC on all laboratory equipment and supplies. Other duties appropriate for skills and training as assigned. The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the units policies.
