Lab Steward information

What is the highest paying lab job?

The highest paying lab jobs are often senior roles such as Laboratory Directors or Principal Investigators, who oversee research projects and manage teams. These positions typically require advanced degrees, extensive experience, and specialized skills, and they can earn six-figure salaries depending on the industry and location.

What are lab stewards?

Lab stewards are individuals responsible for managing and maintaining laboratory spaces to ensure they remain organized, safe, and compliant with regulations. Their duties often include overseeing lab inventory, coordinating the disposal of hazardous materials, and ensuring equipment is properly maintained and calibrated. Lab stewards may also help facilitate communication between lab users and safety officers, and assist with training staff on lab protocols. They play a crucial role in supporting the day-to-day operations of research and teaching laboratories.

What are some common challenges faced by a Lab Steward, and how can they be addressed?

Lab Stewards often face challenges such as maintaining strict inventory control, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and managing the timely distribution of laboratory supplies. Staying organized and communicating regularly with lab staff can help prevent shortages and ensure smooth operations. Familiarity with inventory management systems and a proactive approach to restocking and waste disposal are crucial for success in this role.

What is the difference between Lab Steward vs Lab Technician?

AspectLab StewardLab Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certifications in lab safety or handling hazardous materialsHigh school diploma or associate degree; certifications vary by specialty
Work EnvironmentEducational, research, or healthcare labs; often involved in maintaining lab safety and inventoryClinical, research, or industrial labs; performing tests, preparing samples, and maintaining equipment
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, research facilities, healthcare settingsHospitals, research labs, manufacturing plants

Lab Stewards and Lab Technicians often share similar environments and credentials, but Lab Stewards focus more on safety, inventory, and lab maintenance, while Lab Technicians perform testing and sample analysis. Both roles are essential in laboratory operations, with overlapping skills but distinct primary responsibilities.

What does a lab steward do?

A lab steward is responsible for managing laboratory supplies, maintaining inventory, and ensuring proper storage and safety protocols. They often assist with equipment maintenance, record keeping, and may support compliance with safety standards. Strong organizational skills and knowledge of lab procedures are important for this role.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A Lab Steward typically does not earn $10,000 a month without a degree; such high salaries are more common in specialized fields like software development, sales, or entrepreneurship. Some roles in sales or tech may reach this level through experience, certifications, or performance-based commissions, but they often require skills and training beyond a standard degree. Generally, high-paying jobs without a degree involve technical skills, certifications, or entrepreneurial efforts rather than entry-level positions like Lab Steward.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lab Steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lab Steward, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of laboratory safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant laboratory coursework. Familiarity with inventory management systems, chemical handling procedures, and basic lab equipment is typically required. Excellent communication, reliability, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient operation of the laboratory and support the work of scientists and researchers.

What do laboratory attendants do?

Laboratory attendants perform tasks such as cleaning and maintaining lab equipment, preparing samples, and ensuring a clean and organized environment. They may also assist with basic testing procedures and follow safety protocols, often working under the supervision of scientists or lab technicians.

Position Summary

NIC is seeking an experienced Sr. R&D Scientist to lead execution of high-performance coatings and advanced material development programs from concept through qualification, scale-up, and commercialization support. This is a balanced hands-on and program-driving role. You will perform experimental work, direct technician-supported lab execution, and build the technical body of evidence needed to advance projects through phase-gate review. Youll work closely with the Director of R&D and cross-functional partners in manufacturing, quality, EH&S, supply chain, and sales to deliver products that exceed performance, cost, timeline, and operational requirements.

Why Join NIC

  • Be part of a best-in-class organization and R&D team commercializing products that outperform the competition on this planet and beyond.
  • Own rapid 0-to-1 development of high-impact solutions.
  • Work in a high-standard environment where evidence drives decisions and accountability is valued.
  • Build your career in the beautiful Rogue Valley with good work-life balance and excellent compensation.

What Youll Do

  • Lead execution of coating formulation and materials development programs using NIC core technologies in a world class lab, assisted by cutting edge software tools and a world-class characterization suite.
  • Drive projects from concept through lab validation, phase-gate review, qualification, scale-up, manufacturing implementation, and early commercialization support.
  • Design experimental plans to solve formulation, materials, and process challenges.
  • Perform hands-on laboratory work, including formulation, application, testing, and data interpretation.
  • Direct and leverage technician support for sample preparation, testing, data collection, and lab throughput.
  • Build the technical body of evidence used to assess readiness for program progression.
  • Help define milestones, maintain project timelines, and drive cross-functional follow-through.
  • Prepare technical updates, gate-review content, and supporting documentation for development decisions.
  • Partner with manufacturing and process engineering to ensure products are scalable, repeatable, and practical for production.
  • Identify technical, manufacturability, quality, safety, cost, and timeline risks early and drive mitigation plans.
  • Support supplier and vendor qualification, material evaluations, and commercialization activities.
  • Support raw material selection, cost-performance optimization, and SDS-related technical inputs.
  • Incorporate regulatory and product stewardship inputs into development planning and phase-gate progression.
  • Help refine laboratory methods, development workflows, and technical best practices.

What Were Looking For

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience in coatings formulation, coatings development, materials development, process development, or related chemical product development.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical development work in an industrial R&D environment.
  • Strong knowledge of coating chemistry, formulation design, cure mechanisms, pigment and filler interactions, and performance-property relationships.
  • Strong understanding of formulation and process engineering and the realities of scaling products from lab to manufacturing.
  • Experience with scale-up, plant trials, production implementation, qualification, or manufacturing troubleshooting.
  • Experience driving projects through a phase-gate, stage-gate, or similar structured development process.
  • Experience preparing technical evidence packages, milestone updates, and gate-review materials.
  • Experience coordinating work across technicians, manufacturing, suppliers, vendors, or other cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to design experiments, interpret data, and solve technical problems with limited oversight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and documentation habits.
  • Ability to work on site.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and meet applicable export-control requirements, including qualification as a U.S. Person.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with powder coatings, liquid coatings, protective coatings, specialty finishes, or other formulated industrial products.
