Job description

Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist
Location: Sitka, AK
Salary Range: $76,000 $110,000
Schedule: Day Shift, Full-Time
Sign-On Bonus: Up to $25,000
Relocation Assistance: Up to $10,000

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Lab Scientist to join our hospital-based laboratory team in Sitka. Under minimal supervision, this role involves performing high-complexity testing in compliance with CLIA standards and providing a broad range of diagnostic and laboratory services. This position requires weekend and night shift rotation to ensure 24-hour lab coverage and supports patients across the lifespan, from infants to geriatric.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Independently perform all levels of lab testing, including CLIA-defined high-complexity testing.

  • Interpret and verify test results; identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient data.

  • Provide expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety.

  • Collaborate with medical staff on lab testing and utilization; serve as a resource for LIS issues and clinical questions.

  • Develop, review, and update department procedures using CLSI format.

  • Monitor and maintain quality control standards and ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory bodies.

  • Support laboratory manager in staff competency evaluations and process improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain lab instruments and equipment, review quality control data (e.g., Levey-Jennings charts), and ensure readiness for inspections.

  • Train and support MLTs, LSTs, and new hires; ensure adequate inventory and supply management.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Equivalent education, training, or experience may be considered in lieu of a degree on a year-for-year basis.

Certifications (Required):

  • Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP), Medical Technologist (AMT), or equivalent national certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of progressive clinical lab experience or completion of a one-year hospital internship post-degree.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • CLIA high-complexity testing and laboratory quality control.

  • LIS operations and lab instrumentation.

  • Regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission).

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting lab equipment and interpreting lab results.

  • Written and verbal communication.

  • Training and mentoring staff.

Ability to:

  • Work independently and make high-stakes decisions impacting patient care.

  • Coordinate effectively with healthcare professionals and interdisciplinary teams.

  • Maintain and update technical documentation, procedures, and regulatory compliance.
